(aka "Get Out Your Handkerchiefs")
Directed by Bertrand Blier
France 1978
Gérard Depardieu, Patrick Dewaere and Carole Laure star in a sweet and funny exploration of love and its shifting configurations. Doting spouse Depardieu attempts to alleviate wife Laure's depression, even if it means opening their marriage up to accommodate school teacher Dewaere—but as it turns out, her preferred bedmate is bullied schoolboy Riton Liebman. With Michel Serrault (La Cage aux Folles) as a concerned neighbor. In the U.S., the movie won the National Society of Film Critics award for Best Picture and then the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, while back home Georges Delerue's score earned the composer his first César Award. *** The lightly mocking title Get Out Your Handkerchiefs (Préparez Vos Mouchoirs) sets the tone for this Bertrand Blier-directed amalgam of the sentimental and sardonic. Gérard Depardieu plays an at-wit's-end husband, Raoul, who'll go to any lengths to sexually satisfy his wife, Solange (Carole Laure). Raoul decides that the best thing to cure Solange's boredom would be if she took a lover; thus, he chooses Stéphane (Patrick Dewaere) for the "job." But Stéphane isn't any more successful in arousing Solange than her husband had been. Eventually, it is a 13-year-old boy who quenches Solange's erotic yearnings. Get Out Your Handkerchiefs won a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar as well as a French César award for Best Score (by Georges Delerue). Excerpt from B+N located HERE |

NOTE:
The below
Blu-ray
captures were taken directly from the
Blu-ray
disc.
On their
Blu-ray,
Cohen Media use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (16-bit) in the
original French language. Dialogue is clean and audible with the film
exporting few aggressive effects. The score is by
Georges Delerue (The
Day of the Dolphin, King
of Hearts,
The
High Commissioner,
Silkwood,
Mister
Johnson, Jules
et Jim, The Woman Next Door,
The Last Metro,
Day For
Night) and plays
subtly in the background. Cohen Media offer
burned-in English
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Cohen Media
Blu-ray
are a little light on the extras with a 5-minute introduction by
film-programmer Richard Pena, a trailer and re-release trailer plus the
package has an 8-page liner notes leaflet with color photos and credits.
Get Out Your Handkerchiefs
is quite amusing and Bertrand Blier does an admirable job in fashioning
a splendid, very French, comedy. I enjoyed seeing it on Blu-ray.
Fans of the director or Gérard Depardieu, Patrick Dewaere and Carole
Laure - who are all excellent - should consider indulging at the right
price. Yes, I would revisit this.
