(aka 'El caminante' or 'The Devil Incarnate' or 'The Traveler')

Directed by Paul Naschy (as Jacinto Molina)
Spain 1979

A master class in sin and depravity, when the Devil himself walks the earth!

"…and no good deed shall go unpunished …"

The action takes place in 16th century Spain. The Devil comes to earth to live as a mere mortal. Together with a human companion, Tomas, he travels, like Don Quixote, through the countryside and has a series of wild encounters with both men and women. On the way he acquires great wealth and even fathers a child. But too late he learns a terrible lesson about we devious humans.

Widely recognised as one of horror star Paul Naschy's very best films, THE DEVIL INCARNATE is bawdy, shocking, funny and thought provoking. In the spirit of THE DECAMERON or THE CANTERBURY TALES the film presents a parade of human types from the saintly to the downright mean and nasty. But who is worse… the Devil or Mankind?

Created from a brand new 4k scan of the original negative, THE DEVIL INCARNATE makes its Blu-ray and US debut in an edition packed with exclusive extra features.

Theatrical Release: November 10th, 1979 (Paris International Fantastic Film Festival)

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were obtained directly from the Blu-ray disc.

This Mondo Macabro HD transfer of The Devil Incarnate is advertised as 'Brand new 4k transfer from film negative'. It looks very good on a single-layered disc with a supportive bitrate. The film has many very dark scenes and they have not been compromised by the 1080P transfer. There is consistent grain texture, rich colors and it looks very film-like in the 1.66:1 aspect ratio. Quite pleasing with no remarkable damage or even notable speckles. This looks great in-motion.

Mondo Macabro use a linear PCM, authentic, mono track (24-bit) in the original Spanish language. There are minor effects - horses, some violence, plenty of sensual moans and there is a score by Ángel Arteaga that supports the era, church scenes and adventure aspects. It all sounds very true in the uncompressed.  There are optional English subtitles (see sample below) on Mondo Macabro's Region FREE Blu-ray.

Mondo Macabro has given us a new audio commentary by Troy Howarth author of So Deadly, So Perverse: 50 Years of Italian Giallo Films. He states that he think this is Paul Naschy's best film and he goes into detail about El caminante, Naschy's other work - the film's stylistic choices of fast-motion, slow-motion, freeze-frame and use of archival war footage. I thought it was excellent. There is also a 10-minute introduction to the film by Paul Naschy who cites it as key in his career. There is a new 1/4 hour exclusive interview with actor David Rocha where he discusses his friendship with Naschy plus we get exclusive interviews with Sergio (29:40) and Bruno Molina (5:30) - Naschy's sons - who are also thank by Howarth at the end of the commentary. Lastly, are some Mondo Macabro previews.

I really enjoyed The Devil Incarnate . I agree with Troy Howarth and it's now my favorite from the director - the constant adult situations, bawdy comments, dark comedy and lack of restraint (that could have never been achieved in the Franco era) make for a wonderfully entertaining film experience.  The commentary adds significant value and Mondo Macabro's Region FREE Blu-ray is strongly recommended!
