USA 1992
When down-on-her-luck country girl Shirlee Kenyon (Dolly Parton, 9 to 5) walks through the wrong door at the right time, she accidentally becomes Chicago's newest talk radio celebrity and turns the Windy City's hottest radio station upside down. With her homespun wit and down-home advice, Shirlee immediately wins listeners' hearts but causes hilarious confusion for her ratings-conscious boss (Griffin Dunne, After Hours) and comical havoc for the investigative reporter (James Woods, The Onion Field) trying to uncover her mysterious past. Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs), Teri Hatcher (TV's Desperate Housewives), Jerry Orbach (TV's Law & Order), Philip Bosco (Angie) and Jeff Garlin (TV's Curb Your Enthusiasm) co-star in the romantic comedy that will warm your heart. *** Leaving her rural life in Arkansas, Shirlee Kenyon (Dolly Parton) moves to Chicago and seeks employment at a radio station. When a mix-up finds Shirlee sitting in as the host on a show for call-in advice, her common-sense wisdom wins over fans. Soon she's "Doctor Shirlee," an in-demand on-air personality, but, of course, she's lacking in the proper credentials, a fact that journalist Jack Russell (James Woods) already suspects. Will Shirlee be able to keep her new gig if the truth gets out. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were obtained directly from the Blu-ray disc. This new Kino 1080P of Straight Talk is on a single-layered Blu-ray with a reasonable bitrate. It can look a bit faded. It is in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio but the image is not dynamic and has modest contrast. But the presentation is consistent and superior to SD. DTS-Master 2.0 channel (16-bit) track in the original English language. Brad Fiedel (Terminator + Terminator 2, Fright Night, Johnny Mnemonic) is credited with the original score and adaptations while Dolly Parton wrote and performed many original songs; "Dirty Job", "The Light of a Clear Blue Morning", "Blue Me" and of course, "Straight Talk". There are no subtitles on Kino's Region 'A' Blu-ray. Kino has given us a commentary track with the director of Straight Talk, Barnet Kellman - who has mostly done a lot of good TV. Kino also gives us 3 trailers (for the films, "Two Much", "Blaze", and "Big Business"). Straight Talk is a fun film, full of great performances. What stands out most about the film is its unique merging of the "Working-Girl" styled plot with Dolly Parton's music and charm. What should have been something akin to a TV movie-of-the-week, manages to rise above its constraints. It is a joy to revisit this, often, overlooked film. |
