People who cross the Sawyer family or wander onto their farm have a habit of disappearing. When teenage Betty (Lorina Kamburova) is lured into a deathtrap by young Jed Sawyer (Boris Kabakchiev), her ranger father Hartman (Stephen Dorff, ZAYTOUN) uses child endangerment laws to remove all the Sawyer spawn from matriarch Verna (Lili Taylor, THE CONJURING, consigning eldest them to juvenile reformatories where their names are changed to protect their identities. Ten years later, nurse Lizzie (Vanessa Grasse) starts work at Gorham House on the very night that Verna - having married into money - arrives with a high-priced lawyer demanding to see Jed. When she is refused, her attempt to break into the facility starts a riot in which delinquents Ike (James Bloor, DUNKIRK) and Clarice (Jessica Madsen) escape with hulking Bud (Sam Coleman) - who has just murdered his tormentor Dr. Lang (Christopher Adamson, EDWARD II) - and gentle Jackson (EASTENDERS' Sam Strike), taking Lizzie hostage as they take to the road bound for Mexico but ending up on a detour through the Texas badlands. After learning that one of the escapees is grown-up Jed, Hartman is soon on their trail with vengeance in mind and forcing a final confrontation with the Sawyer clan.

After a terrible Michael Bay remake and a brainless 3D "sequel", it's reboot time for THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE franchise with this incredibly unnecessary and dull "origin" story lensed on the cheap in current Hollywood tax credit haven Bulgaria. Never as grueling as the original or even as oddball as Tobe Hooper's own comic sequel, LEATHERFACE is a parade of white trash leering and cackling, and the violence similarly never has the visceral effect of directors Alexandre Bustillo's and Julien Maury's repellent INSIDE. While it is pretty obvious just which of the escapees is young Jed, and there is no suspense as to his survival, the film at least does has one final surprise when one would expect one character to end up joining the family. The final product proves to be just as expendable and forgettable as the other reboots.

Comments

LionsGate's dual-layer DVD of this digitally-lensed film looks a tad soft, but that is presumably by design given the period setting, the sun-baked days and blue nights, and the "BADLANDS meets THE VIRGIN SUICIDES" aesthetic. The Dolby Digital 5.1 track is pretty front-oriented with surprisingly little opportunity to hear the chainsaw moving across the sound field or surging up from the rears. Optional English HoH subtitles are included. The self-congratulatory making-of featurette has the usual "reinvent the franchise" hype while the deleted scenes are disposable with the exception of the radically different seven minute alternate ending (in which Grandpa makes a bookending appearance).
