(aka "Le'hishaer ba'hayim" )
directed by Eran Riklis
UK/Israel/France 2012
Fahed (Abdallah El Akal, DAVID & KAMAL) is a twelve-year-old Palestinian refugee living in a camp in 1982 Lebanon with his grandfather and his father (Jony Arbid, FOR MY FATHER) who obsessively cares for an olive tree that he vows to replant when they return home. When Fahed's father is killed in an Israeli air strike and his best friend (Adham Abu Aqel) shot by Lebanese Phalangists, Fahed sees captive Israeli pilot Yoni (Stephen Dorff, SOMEWHERE) as his way to get across the border to find his old home and plant his father's tree. A wounded (by Fahed) and cuffed Yoni and Fahed - now being hunted by his own people for freeing Yoni - must learn to look past their differences and trust each other as they make a treacherous journey on foot, in stolen automobiles, and even on the back of a donkey across the figurative and literal minefield between Beirut and the border. |

The UK Artificial Eye and US Strand Releasing discs appear to come from the same HD master. The US release has a higher bitrate but the difference is negligeable. I prefer the US release for providing both optional subs for the Hebrew and Arabic dialogue only as well as full SDH subtitles for all of the dialogue (the US subs are also larger but not distracting). Both releases have similar 5.1 tracks (the UK offers a 2.0 downmix as well). The UK documentary runs slightly longer than the US one, but they appear to be identical in content. The theatrical trailers are also identical other than the different distributor logos. Coming out on Blu-ray in Germany in April 2014, HERE. |
