WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Hello friends! In the
current environment it is getting
more and more difficult for us to
maintain the website. Our income has
severely been diminished by the
increasing number of DVD/Blu-ray
producers selling discs from their
own sites. At present they don't
offer us affiliate commissions which
are our major source of income
(Amazon, Barnes and Noble etc.). To
continue producing comparisons,
reviews and articles, we
regretfully
request YOUR
assistance in the form of small
monthly donations. We have started a
Patreon page with the hopes that
some of our followers would be
willing to donate to keep DVDBeaver
alive. We are a small niche, so your
generosity is vital to our
existence. |

Directed by Vincente Minnelli
USA 1960
Wade Hunnicutt is a big man who casts a big shadow, one that looms over the Texas backwoodsmen who work his land…over the beautiful, embittered wife he cheats on…and over the sons – one from marriage and one illegitimate – who strive for their father’s respect. Robert Mitchum “gives one of his greatest performances” (Michael Barson, The Illustrated Who’s Who of Hollywood Directors) as Wade, and Vincente Minnelli directs this sprawling, emotionally volatile tale of an epic clash between generations. In early-career roles, George Peppard and George Hamilton costar as Wade’s sons, determined to be their own men, yet in danger of repeating their father’s life-crippling legacy of lust and violence. *** For his entire life, Theron Hunnicut's (George Hamilton) mother, Hannah (Eleanor Parker), has sheltered him from the philandering of his father, Wade (Robert Mitchum). Despite her best efforts, Theron acquires his father's taste for women when the elder Hunnicutt takes a sudden interest in his upbringing. When Theron unexpectedly impregnates Libby, the daughter of a local shopkeeper (Everett Sloane), he struggles with conflicted feelings about marriage and his family's legacy of infidelity. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. "Home from the Hill", the 2.5-hour Vincente Minnelli film is presented by Warner Archive on a dual-layered Blu-ray with a maxed out bitrate. The film was shot in beautiful Cinemascope by director of photography Milton Krasner (All About Eve, The Seven Year Itch, Along Came Jones, Bus Stop, An Affair to Remember). The level of detail can vary depending on the scene, with some scenes looking a little soft or fuzzy (this is due to the film stock/lenses used in filming in cinemascope, not the fabulous transfer Warner has done here). The range of blacks is wide, showing a healthy contrast. Colors are vibrant, without looking artificially boosted. "Home from the Hill" is presented in 2.0 stereo on a 24-bit DTS-HD track. The levels of dialogue mix nicely with the score. Speaking of the score, it was composed by Bronislau Kaper (Mutiny on the Bounty, Lili, A Night at the Opera, etc.) with an orchestra conducted by Charles Wolcott (Bambi). There are optional English subtitles on this Region Free Blu-ray. The only extra included on this Warner Archive Blu-ray is the film's trailer. Vincente Minnelli's "Home from the Hill" is an incredibly powerful piece of cinema. Warner Archive's robust transfer is something to behold. Though there are no extras, this Blu-ray is absolutely recommended to fans of Mitchum, Minnelli or any of the great cast. Colin Zavitz |
