directed by Richard Cunha
USA 1958
Join Dirk Greene (Michael Whalen) and
he takes June Saxton (Cathy Downs) and Steve Dayton
(Richard Travis) on an unwitting adventure to the Moon,
with the help of two convicts, Lon and Gary (Gary Clarke
and Tommy Cook). Of course, everyone is in for more than
they bargained for when they are gassed, encounter Rock
Men, a giant Spider, and the all-female inhabitants of
the moon. Campy, hilarious fun! Scanned from a rare
original theatrical 35mm print, presented in its
original 1:85 format. *** An old scientist has his own personal
rocketship sitting in his backyard. Because the Army
doesn’t want him blasting off without their consent,
he’s reduced to shanghaiing two escaped convicts into
being his crew. Naturally, his partner and his fiancée
stowaway on the rocket and the five of them wind up
going to the moon. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.
ADDITION: Snappy Video - Region FREE - Blu-ray (June 2018): Snappy Video's 1080P BD-R presentation is very watchable claiming to be taken from a 'rare 35mm source'. There is some warping as seen in the first 10-minutes as the image jumps up-and-down a shade. This sci-fi 'gem' from the late 50s is transferred in HD in 1.85:1 - and has some minor issues with the stock footage looking quote abysmal - but that would be par for the original production. For most of the presentation it looks acceptable, but certainly not stellar, in-motion showing instances of impressive sharpness and contrast.
Snappy Video use a linear PCM 2.0 channel mono track (16-bit) that supports the, very modest, sci-fi effects - There are some dated effects in the film - with some screaming and the score by Nicholas Carras ( The Astro Zombies, The Doll Squad and Girl in Gold Boots among his credits.). It's unremarkable but on-par with the production. Dialogue is, unfortunately hushed and I had to crank the violume. There are optional Spanish subtitles on the Region FREE Blu-ray disc. The supplements have, what is advertised to be, an original US trailer but is quite cropped, plus a German theatrical trailer and well as text pages on The Stars of Missile to the Moon with cast bios and pics, the original Press Book and a poster lobby card gallery. Snappy Video have given us a BD-R Blu-ray of one of the most 'so-bad-it's-good' sci-fi similar to their BD release The Phantom Planet and very worthy of our listing HERE. Missile to the Moon has plenty of similarities to The Phantom Planet and I loved the heavy cheese with alien women and battles to mate with human males - how cool is this? If you are into this genre - this is a must-own - despite all the inferiorities - which tend to be an appropriate match to the film. Go for it!Gary Tooze |
