(aka "Rozario to banpaia" or "Rosario + Vampire" or "Rosario to Vampire Capu2" or "Rosario to Vampire")
Directed by Takayuki Inagaki
Japan
2008
Tsukune’s terrible grades stick him in a school where all his classmates are monsters— and if they figure out his human status, he’s fresh meat. Things perk up when his scent attracts the hungry lips of a gorgeous vampire named Moka. Soon Tsukune is seduced by a succubus, tormented by a frisky witch, and stalked by a snow fairy! He’s a slacker in the human world but scores an A+ with monsters. *** Rosario + Vampire (literally "rosary and vampire"). Tsukune Aono is an average teenager who is unable to get into any local high schools due to his poor grades. As a last ditch effort to secure his education, his parents enroll him in a private school called Yokai Academy, which he discovers is a boarding school for monsters. The school teaches monsters how to coexist with humans, including disguising as them, but any real humans found on campus are to be killed. Although he fears for his life, Tsukune befriends a beautiful vampire girl named Moka Akashiya, who enjoys his company and especially the taste of his blood. During a fight with a school bully, Tsukune accidentally removes the rosario around Moka's neck, and discovers that she transforms into a powerful vampire with a completely different personality. A 13-episode anime adaptation of Rosario + Vampire aired in Japan between January and March 2008. A second season of the series, Rosario + Vampire Capu2, aired in Japan between October and December 2008. Excerpt from Wikipedia located HERE |

NOTE:
The below
Blu-ray
captures were taken directly from the
Blu-ray
disc.
Blu-ray
1 (Rosario + Vampire)
It is reasonably heavy in the "fanservice" vein but more
titillation than implied intercourse.
NOTE: Fan service refers to
sequences generally include to titillate the viewer or eroticize a
character. This typically includes scantily-clad costumes, up-skirt panty
camera angles, cleavage and nudity (in baths or showers). The term 'Ecchi'
- the Japanese pronunciation of the letter "H" - and can extend
further to more overt sexuality. It is essentially erotic softcore with naked
breasts, buttocks, long bare legs (but not exposed genitals), at times,
shown in a humorous way. Japanese erotic content is rated "H" while
in the rest of the world uses the more common "X" rating.
On their
Blu-ray,
Funimation offer the options of a Dolby TrueHD 2.0 channel stereo in the
original Japanese (16-bit) or Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround in the English DUB (also
16-bit).
There is sporadic aggressive violence in 'battles' and some surprising
separation in the DUB. The music is
credited to Kôhei Tanaka and Shiroh Hamaguchi. The songs Cosmic Love
and Dancing in the Velvet Moon are performed by Nana Mizuki. Funimation offer mandatory English
subtitles on the Japanese track (and on the English DUB signs, txt and
song lyrics are translated) persuadably to protect the Japanese releases
- that are also Region 'A' -locked
Blu-rays.
The Funimation first
Blu-ray
package has no audio commentaries. The only extras are the Textless
Closing Song "Dancing in the Velvet Moon" for the first season
(Japanese with English subtitles) and the Textless Opening Song "Discotheque"
and Closing Song "Trinity Cross" plus 3 trailers for other anime.
As far as 'fanservice'-oriented anime go, in
2011, we reviewed
High School of the Dead on
Blu-ray, then
more recently
Prison School on
Blu-ray, a
couple of weeks later
Sekirei
and last week the erotic comedy,
My First Girlfriend is a Gal. Rosario + Vampire is
balances a Harry-Potter-like story with a private institute called Yokai
Academy. So I guess you could throw-in a little
X-Men and
Monsters Inc. - in short it is a boarding school for
latent-powerful high-school level youths from witches and snow fairies
to standard 'monsters': vampires, werewolves etc. adding-in gratuitous
upskirt panty shots and sweater-concealing over-sized breasts.
Rosario + Vampire
has some, typical
'fan service', but not fetishized (Prison School),
apocalyptic-based (High School of the Dead)
or adolescent comedy (My
First Girlfriend is a Gal) and only moderately super-hero (Sekirei). It
was popular enough to have a second season and I would say it is still
for adults only with the shifting story leaning to the fantasy-horror
realm. If I receive and review more of these anime, I will probably
do a genre page with a rating and/or a top 10. So far I'd put Rosario
+ Vampire somewhere in the middle. When it gets too complex with
extraneous characters I tend to lose interest. |
