(aka "Résistance" )

directed by Alain Goldman (as Ilan Goldman), Miguel Courtois, and David Delrieux
France 2014

Based on true events, the French miniseries RESISTANCE follows the interconnected stories of a group of young men and women for whom resistance is patriotism and waiting out the war is not an option. Eighteen-year-old Lili (Pauline Burlet, LA VIE EN ROSE) is living in Paris and working at the Musée de l'Homme where she has involved in the publication of the underground paper Resistance with mentor Boris (Robert Plagnol, A SECRET) and founder Paul Rivet (Alain Doutey, FRANTIC). Her roommate Cristina (Cristina Flutur, BEYOND THE HILLS) secretly publishes a Yiddish resistance paper. "The Kid" (César Domboy, THE PRINCESS OF MONTPENSIER) works in a garage with widow Sylvette (Christelle Cornil, TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT) who helps circulate the paper and sabotage vehicles belonging to the enemy. Lili's fifteen-year-old friend Jeannot (Tom Hudson) has decided to run away to London and fight for de Gaule but finds himself a prisoner in the Pau barracks while teenage Bernard (Matila Malliarakis, BEYOND THE WALLS) finds himself imprisoned for printing leaflets on a toy printing press. Among the elder rebels are brothel madam Paulette (Isabelle Nanty, AMELIE) while The Countess (Fanny Ardant, CONFIDENTIALLY YOURS) shelters Jews and British airmen and organizes their transport to safety. As an imposter within their ranks starts dismantling the network from the inside, Lili and "The Kid" find themselves graduating from distributing the paper to escorting refugees and increasingly dangerous operations.

Comments

Although the show's six episodes run less than six hours, Eureka has gone the extra mile with this handsomely-designed production and spread it across three dual-layer DVDs with higher bitrates than two-and-a-half-hours on two discs might have afforded with perhaps not that significant a decrease in compression quality. The French Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround track appears to be the original mix rather than a 5.1 track since the French Blu-ray and DVDs list 2.0 audio. The optional English subtitles
