Australia 2015

Based on the one man show by Lawrence Leung (who appears as himself in bookending segments to obfuscate the veracity of the autobiographical aspects of what was described in its state incarnation as a "comic documentary"), SUCKER finds Chinese-Australian high school student Lawrence (YouTube sensation John Luc) disgracing his parents by being caught cheating on his college entrance exams and scuttling their dreams of him going to medical school. After an argument in which Lawrence angrily agrees to pay back his wasted tuition, he is sent to stay with his Chessmaster uncle Sam (Yang Li, MAO'S LAST DANCER) to set him straight. Instead, Lawrence becomes fascinated with the profession of "professional liar" demonstrated by conman "The Professor" (Timothy Spall, MR. TURNER) who the younger man observes trick the entire chess team into believing that he has played all of them simultaneously and beat half of them (the stipulation of a wager against Uncle Sam). Under the cover story for his family of driving a tour bus for a few weeks, Lawrence joins The Professor and his sullen daughter/partner Sarah (Lily Sullivan, the short-lived American/Australian NBC sitcom CAMP) to learn the tricks of the trade in a series of scams to raise money for the biggest scam: making a killing at the "Cooks' Game" private poker match against dangerous and deadly opponents including The Professor's former partner Riley (Jacek Koman, CHILDREN OF MEN) who previously made off with both his money and Sarah's mother. Upon their arrival in Melbourne for the match, Lawrence discovers a secret that has him wondering if is he really is a partner-in-training or the victim of a long con.

Comments

Omnibus' dual-layer DVD features a serviceable progressive, anamorphic encode with some edge enhancement that may be more obvious on larger screens. The Dolby Digital 5.1 track is utilizes its surrounds mainly for music, atmosphere in busier scenes, and giving some depth to the sound effects that accompany the film's moments of metacommentary. English Closed Captioning is available for those who can access it. The sole extra is a short behind the scenes segment of little import.
