Directed by Kelly Reichardt
USA 2006
Two old friends reunite for a quietly revelatory overnight camping trip in this breakout feature from Kelly Reichardt, a microbudget study of character and masculinity that introduced many viewers to one of contemporary American cinema’s most independent artists. As expectant father Mark (Daniel London) and nomadic Kurt (Will Oldham) travel by car and foot into the woods in search of some secluded hot springs, their fumbling attempts to reconnect keep butting up against the limits of their friendship and the reality of how much their paths have diverged since their shared youth. Adapted from a short story by Jonathan Raymond and accompanied by an atmospheric Yo La Tengo score, Old Joy is a contemplative, wryly observed triumph whose modest scale belies the richness of its insight. *** Old Joy is writer/director Kelly Reichardt's long-awaited follow-up to her revered but underseen 1994 feature debut, River of Grass. (She directed a couple of shorts in the interim, including Ode, a Super-8 film inspired by the song "Ode to Bill.") Daniel London and cult folksinger Will Oldham star in the film as two old friends who go on a camping trip to a hot springs in the Cascade mountain range of Oregon. London's Mark is the responsible one with the modest house, the wife (who resents his gallivanting off), the dog (who comes along), and the baby on the way. He listens to Air America, and makes all the right liberal noises. Oldham's Kurt is the free-spirit type with the untamed facial hair and the junker car that looks more lived-in than vehicular. Kurt suggests the trip, and they take Mark's car. Kurt has the directions to the place, and they get lost ("I think we're somewhere...in the area") and spend the night at a garbage-strewn campsite, where they discuss their lives, and Kurt laments the apparent dissolution of their friendship. In the morning, they have breakfast in a diner, and Mark apologizes to Tanya (Tanya Smith) over the phone, explaining that he'll be home later than expected. In the daylight, they find the hot springs, and spend the afternoon quietly unwinding. Reichardt co-wrote Old Joy with Jonathan Raymond, adapting his short story, which was originally written as a collaboration with photographer Justine Kurland. It was shot (on Super-16) by Peter Sillen and features a soundtrack by Yo La Tengo. The film was selected by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art for inclusion in the 2006 edition of New Directors/New Films. Excerpt from B+N located HERE |

NOTE:
The below
Blu-ray
captures were taken directly from the
Blu-ray
disc.
On their
Blu-ray,
Criterion use a linear PCM mono track (24-bit) in the original English
language again advancing on the similar,. but 16-bit, audio of the Soda
Pictures transfer. The film has s subtle score by Yo La Tengo (Science
is Fiction,
Junebug), sounding marginally deeper. Criterion also offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Criterion
Blu-ray
include new interviews with Reichardt for 19-minutes discussing the
evolution of Old Joy, cinematographer Peter Sillen for
10-minutes, and author Jonathan Raymond for another 10-minutes. There is
also an interesting new conversation between actors Daniel London and
Will Oldham for over 20-minutes and the package has a liner notes
booklet with an essay by film critic Ed Halter and (on the Blu-ray) the
short story by Raymond on which the film is based and a gorgeous new
cover by Riccardo Vecchio.
The Soda
Blu-ray
disc with Old Joy included Reichardt's debut River of
Grass (1:15:26 in 480i) and, click-thru, text screens for the story
Old Joy.
The comparisons seem moot as the
Kelly Reichardt
Collection package is no more
(out-of-print). Old Joy
has Kelly Reichardt's earthy Indie brilliance - a fascinating film of
male-re-bonding with an outdoor-sie spirit. Great cinema for Criterion on Blu-ray
- let's get the rest out in North America soon.
NOTE: Meek's Cutoff is on
Blu-ray both
in Soda's
Kelly Reichardt Collection and by Oscilloscope
Laboratories
