(aka "Carnívoros" )

directed by Manolito Motosierra
Spain 2013

There's a good, although over-familiar, scenario at the core of THE SPANISH CHAINSAW MASSACRE (originally titled CARNÍVOROS), but it's more interested in being outrageous and shocking rather than suspenseful. Less of a nod to THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE than H.G. Lewis' 2000 MANIACS (or maybe even The Asylum's 2001 MANIACS), the film finds the touring heavy metal band The Metal Cocks - pregnant Penny Pussy (Nereida López), Rasputin (Dani Mesado, THE CORPSE GRINDERS 3), Petete (Óscar Gisbert), Torete, and Bull (El Capitan Almendra) - and their manager (Pedro García Oliva) getting a flat in Galicia and taking a detour to a village that has not seen any visitors since the days of General Francisco Franco (or so they say). The villagers - most of whom seem to belong to the same Gutierrez family, and as much a group of grotesques as the band members - offer them accommodations for the night while their car is being fixed as well as an invitation to the next day's celebration feast for the return of their patron saint who abandoned them when militia troupes marched into the village and massacred their elders. It doesn't take a lot o guessing as to what part the band and their manager - along with other lost hikers and motorists - will play in the feast as they wander the village and start to disappear.

Comments

88 Film's anamorphic, single-layer disc looks about as good as expected given the amateurish videography, and the Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo track is stronger on exaggerated sound effects and loud, garbled heavy metal music than dialogue. The fact that the film suffered thirty-two seconds of BBFC-mandated cuts suggests that the distributor's heart was not in this particular release since they did not bother to proof the sloppy, presumably auto-translated subtitles. The only extra is a stills gallery. Since the film, gallery, and extras occupy 2.25 GB of the disc, it probably could have used another short film to fill it out a bit more.
