(aka "Robot Jox 2" )

directed by Albert Band
USA 1993

In this unsubstantial but entertaining sequel to Stuart Gordon's Empire Pictures-era production ROBOT JOX (although Full Moon's CRASH AND BURN is also called ROBOT JOX 2 in some territories), the scorpion-like MRAS-2 fighting machine is now being used to escort tourists to the Crystal Vista ghost town (which looks like downtown Los Angeles, only less derelict). The MRAS-2 is piloted by cocky Kurt Russell-esque Drake (Don Michael Paul, ALIEN FROM L.A.) and sidekick mechanic Stumpy (James Staley, PACIFIC HEIGHTS) who are also on the lookout for Centros, outlaws mutated by the toxic gasses in the wasteland between Crystal Vista and the city. Along for one of trips is scientist Leda (Barbara Crampton, CASTLE FREAK) and her reporter friend Annie (Lisa Rinna, TV's DAYS OF OUR LIVES) - who are investigating odd soil samples in Crytal Vista that did not exist until twenty years after the 1993 toxic gas scare - as well as representatives of the Eastern Alliance Wa-Lee (Danny Kamekona, KARATE KID, PART II) and Chou-Sing (Yuji Okumoto, THE GAME) who are making a deal to buy a version of the MRAS-2 (stripped of weapons for entertainment purposes) in exchange for funding to upgrade the robots. While Leda secretly remains behind at Crystal Vista to take more samples, Drake returns from battling Centros in the wasteland with weapons he believes were provided to them by the Eastern Alliance, boss Rooney (Peter Haskell, CHILD’S PLAY 2) takes him off the trip roster. When Wa-Lee shows his true colors, hijacking the MRAS-2 and using its lasers to erode the shields that protect the city from toxic gasses, it is up to Drake and Leda to fight the Wa-Lee and MRAS-2 with the decommissioned MEGA-1 robot in a stop motion - courtesy of David Allen (PUPPET MASTER) - fight to the finish.

Comments

88 Film's DVD - the cover of which emphasizes the participation of INCEPTION actor Yuji Okumoto over its actual lead - appears to be an NTSC-PAL transfer of the film's nineties video master, but it does feature the film's VideoZone making-of featurette (which is missing from Shout! Factory's US double bill disc with CRASH AND BURN, also sourced from the existing master). The disc also includes the film's trailer and the 88 Films Trailer Park (no longer called the "Full Moon Trailer Park" since the company has branched out to titles like the Ted V. Mikels collection and TWO MOON JUNCTION).
