USA 1964
U.S. Navy honchos in World War II London have a humdinger of a war on their hands. Now they need a hero to go with it. They want the first American fatality of D-Day to be a sailor, to glorify the navy's effort. Victor/Victoria's Julie Andrews and James Garner headline this earlier milestone comedy from screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky (Network) and director Arthur Hiller (also teamed later on The Hospital). Garner plays Charlie Madison, an officer who cares nothing about glory. That attracts war widow Emily Barham (Andrews), who's had her fill of seeing men go to war and never return. But the pair's culture-clash romance is in peril when Charlie sees that the line to become the navy's defunct hero forms behind him. Your line for hilarious antiwar satire and life-affirming love forms here! |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: Warner Archive Collection Blu-ray - October 14': Firstly, The Americanization of Emily is a first rate comedy with a dark edge. We've already reviewed the wonderful Controversial Classics DVD Boxset - Blackboard Jungle (1955), A Face in the Crowd (1957), Fury (1936), Bad Day at Black Rock (1955), Advise and Consent (1962), The Americanization of Emily (1964) and I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932) - HERE. The new 1080P Blu-ray advances in the expected areas. It is housed on a dual-layered MoD disc with about 5X the bitrate of the SD. As always this will look better, than the DVD, the larger your system. It doesn't look radically different but with the higher resolution the contrast is improved with more layers, the image is brighter with some depth and some texture is peeking through. The audio is transferred via a DTS-HD Master stereo at 2113 kbps. Benefitting is Johnny Mandel's (Pretty Poison, Point Blank, Deathtrap, M*A*S*H, That Cold Day in the Park, Heaven with a Gun etc.) light score balanced nicely between romance and drama. There are optional English subtitles, in a gaudy yellow font, and the Warner Archive Collection Blu-ray disc is region FREE Extras match the, 2005-released, DVD with a commentary by director Arthur Hiller, a 6-minute featurette entitled Action on the Beach in the location of the film shooting with some behind the scenes footage and, lastly, a theatrical trailer. Excellent film but I'd only recommend to those who don't already own the Controversial Classics package or are extra sensitive about the a/v quality. It's not a film I will revisit often - but there are many in the DVD boxset that I do (Blackboard Jungle, Fury, and Bad Day at Black Rock being three). |
