A pistol-packing parson is torn between heaven and hell in this gritty Western adventure starring Glenn Ford, Carolyn Jones, Barbara Hershey and David Carradine. While war rages between the local cattlemen and sheepherders, gunslinger-turned-preacher Jim Killian (Ford) rides into town determined to start his own church. When his efforts to stop the bloodshed lead to rape, arson and murder, Killian must decide whether to bring about peace through faith alone or his deadly skills with a gun. Based on an unproduced screenplay by two-time Academy AwardŽ winner* Dalton Trumbo, Heaven with a Gun was the final film produced by Frank and Maurice King.

Jim Killian (Glenn Ford) is a reformed gunslinger who takes a job as a local preacher in Vinagaroon, Arizona. He arrives during a time of conflict between shepherds and cattlemen who are engaged in a bloody range war. When Coke Beck (David Carradine) hangs a local Indian, the victim's daughter Leloopa (Barbara Hershey) enlists the help of Killian. He tries to mediate the conflict in a meeting between the rival factions, but a member of the congregation exposes him as an ex-convict. He also enlists the help of the heart-of-gold saloon-operator Madge (Carolyn Jones). Killian and the townsfolk, women included, organize a march to the watering hole -- the center of the controversy. The cattlemen approach and draw their guns in what could be a potentially violent confrontation.

Comments

Heaven With a Gun is a dynamite western with a great premise. I wasn't quite as keen on the conclusion but I enjoyed it, regardless.

It's standard single-layered but progressive in the original 2.33:1 aspect ratio. It is quite 'green' in the beginning and although this never totally leaves - it does improve after the first 15-minuites. There are a few speckles but not many and it is free of any strong damage. The image is a bit thick and colors are a bit compromised but overall the disc supports the film to enjoy the SD transfer.

The mono sound is decent but unremarkable and there are no subtitles offered. The original music is credited to Johnny Mandel and he sings the theme song "A Lonley Place". I found that it didn't fit the film at all - really out of place and dated. The only supplement is the film's trailer - looking pretty rough but it is a wonderful come-on for the film.

There are a lot of recognizable performers in Heaven With a Gun (Carolyn Jones, Barbara Hershey, David Carradine, J.D. Cannon, Noah Beery Jr.) and a surprising nude scene with Angelique Pettyjohn (Shahna in TOS - 'The Gamesters of Triskelion'). Glenn Ford gives, his usual, excellent portrayal. Anyone see TOS gal Barbara Babcock? I could watch him in western roles like this all day and night. Sure, there are weaknesses but many will still appreciate.
