directed by William Dieterle, Michael Curtiz
USA 1933

Playboy and ne’er-do-well Gordon Bates is dead, that’s for sure. But whodunit? That’s not so sure. There are suspects aplenty. So From Headquarters comes the army of crime specialists – toxicologists, fingerprint experts, ballistic experts, technicians running data-card tabulations on Hollerith machines and, for good measure, authorities on the use of invisible ink – that know the howdunit can point to the who. George Brent and Eugene Pallette portray the lead crime dogs in this swift sniff-out of a killer that sifts through murderous means and motives at an engagingly pell-mell pace. William Dieterle (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Hunchback of Notre Dame), on his way to A-list prominence, directs with great visual hubbub and flourish.

Comments

From Headquarters is a typical B mystery-crime drama from 1930's with too many red herrings for its short 63-minute running time, but director William Dieterle uses some tricks like POV camera for flashback scenes to elevate this Warner Bros production. George Brent and Margaret Lindsay star, but the film is greatly supported by various character actors, like Eugene Pallette and Hugh Herbert. The print used for this remastered made-on-demand disc is overall in terrific shape. There are some marks and lines running through it, but blacks are deep and film grain is not intrusive. There are 21 chapter and an original theatrical trailer is provided.

The film can be purchased separately or, exclusive to Warner Archives web page, as so called "Warner Bros. '30s Classics Ripped From the Headlines" (HERE) with 4 other early 1930's movies we are reviewing at DVD Beaver, which would make it a better value.
