(aka "Vivo per la tua morte" or "I Live for Your Death" or "Vivo para matarte")

directed by Camillo Bazzoni
Italy 1968

When his cattle are rustled, Mike Sturgess (Steve Reeves, HERCULES) and his brother Roy take chase. Unfortunately, they wind up in the wrong place and are beaten and left for dead by Mike's old friend Martin (Wayde Preston, TV's COLT .45) who has robbed a nearby train. Mike and Roy are wrongfully imprisoned at Yuma where the weaker Roy dies at the hands of sadistic guards. Mike takes part in a massive prison break but finds his ranch now in ruin. With nothing left to live for, Mike goes after Martin and his cohorts, including corrupt sheriff Freeman (Mimmo Palmara, billed as Dick Hunter). When he learns that they have hidden the gold until the heat blows off, he plays them against one another to recover the gold and bring them to justice. Silvana Venturelli (CAMILLE 2000) and Rosalba Neri (THE DEVIL'S WEDDING NIGHT) also appear. The last film of Steve Reeves (who co-wrote with Roberto Natale, KILL BABY KILL), A LONG RIDE FROM HELL (aka I LIVE FOR YOUR DEATH) is not as flashy as the Leone westerns and the action lacks the outrageous verve of Sergio Corbucci's DJANGO. In fact, it feels strangely old-fashioned next to those examples. The film is, however, well-acted, atmospheric, and Reeves is a stoic-yet-sympathetic protagonist. The attractive visuals are the result of a nice collaboration from former cinematographer-turned-director Camillo Bazzoni and cinematographer Enzo Barboni (NIGHTMARE CASTLE) who went on to direct a handful of westerns in the seventies, including the Trinity series with Terence Hill and Bud Spencer. Carlo Savina's score was recently released on CD in Italy by Digitmovies.

Comments

Previously available in a non-anamorphic, PAL-converted DVD from Wild East, Code Red brings A LONG RIDE FROM HELL back to DVD in a high-definition mastered, dual-layer, anamorphic transfer (the 2010 Italian DVD is non-anamorphic). 1.66:1 might have been a better aspect ratio choice (the film would have been projected at 1.85:1 in the US and the source is a Cinerama Releasing element).

The near hour-long interview with co-star Mimmo Palmara and the Steve Reeeves featurette have been ported over from the Wild East release. The trailer for the film, a stills gallery, and other Code Red trailers round out the extras.
