Directed by Lisa Siwe + Mani Maserrat Agah
Sweden 2015 (Season One)

A smart and brooding Swedish detective series, Modus Season 1 follows psychologist and ex-FBI profiler Inger Johanne Vik (Melinda Kinnaman) as she finds herself and her autistic daughter drawn into an investigation of a series of disturbing and brutal deaths in Stockholm.

The case leads her to team up with local detective Ingvar Nymann (Henrik Norlén) and together they set about uncovering the clues to these shocking crimes. As the number of mysterious murders starts to increase, Inger Johanne is driven by her need to protect her daughter and starts noticing a pattern. But her discovery of the killer’s weakness and the connection to a ruthless international network unintentionally turns the entire threat towards herself and her family.

Based on the best-selling novels of Anne Holt, Modus is a thrilling and atmospheric crime series that raises questions about faith, intolerance, and the very nature of love itself.

Theatrical Release: September 23rd, 2015

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Kino Lorber have brought another appealing 'Nordic Noir' to Region 'A' Blu-ray. The language is very direct and matter-of-fact, the pace is deliberate, the settings show examples of vast, bleak landscapes, and the focus centers on moral ambiguities and crime - often serial murderers and missing persons. Modus certainly qualifies.

The image quality is flawless in a direct representation as presented on television in 2015. It is in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio, is crisp, has minor teal-leaning, with all 8 episodes split on two dual-layered Blu-ray discs with supportive bitrates. It is pristinely clean and supports the series exceptionally well in-motion.

Kino Lorber provide the option of a robust DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround track with a few deft separations and some resounding bass -  or a 2.0 channel stereo track (both 24-bit) in the original Swedish language. There are effects and a compelling score by Jacob Groth (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, Millennium TV Mini-Series). It all sounds excellent in the lossless. Kino Lorber add optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

Supplements include only a trailer for the series and a few other related trailers.

Modus was a very nicely crafted thriller series and it is hard not to get fully engaged by these Nordic Noirs. There is a definite style, a scary unusually dangerous character and filled with suspenseful situations, forensic investigations with layered themes of human rights and religious freedoms. I found it extremely entertaining and we endorse Kino's double
Blu-ray package anticipating the second season, also in 1080P.
