(aka "Appels au Meurtre" )
directed by Ken Wiederhorn
USA 1981
A rapist is stalking and slashing his way through Miami and news anchor Jane (Lauren Tewes) begins to suspect that a neighbor (John DiSanti) who lives in the apartment across from hers is the murderer. The police don't believe her so she starts spying on her neighbor and even breaks into his apartment. She turns the tables on him and begins to persecute him by phone but when he recognizes Jane's voice from the television, he starts stalking her and her sister Tracy (Jennifer Jason Leigh in her first role) who has been blind and deaf since she was assaulted as a child. Georgetown Productions' follow-up to FRIDAY THE 13TH, EYES OF A STRANGER takes a Hitchcockian turn on the slasher formula with a dash of REAR WINDOW (Jane lives in the apartment directly across from the suspected killer), VERTIGO (at one point, Jane hangs from a ledge to hide from the killer), MARNIE (Jane is plagued by childhood memories of failing to watch her sister who was then abducted), and a PSYCHO shower murder. The climax combines REAR WINDOW (but Jane is in the killer's apartment when she witnesses her sister being stalked in her own apartment) and WAIT UNTIL DARK as deaf-blind Tracy holds her own against her assailant. While not a gorefest, there's a healthy dollop of Tom Savini make-up effects (some of which was clipped for an R-rating but is presented intact on Warner's DVD), some nudity, and some familiar stalk-and-slash scenes (a clip from Wiederhorn's SHOCK WAVES - also scored by EYES composer Richard Einhorn - precedes plays under one of the stalk and slash scenes). |

Comments |
The Warner DVD of EYES OF A STRANGER (which incorrectly carried an R rating), features a nice 1.78:1 anamorphic, progressive transfer with mono tracks in English, French, and Spanish Although 25 chapters are included, there is no scene selection menu. This DVD features the uncut version of the film including previously cut gore. The most notable addition is the cleaver decapitation. The Warner tape cut away right as the cleaver reached the character's neck but the DVD's instead cut to a reverse angle showing the decapitation reflected in the fishtank (one assumes this was a stylistic choice as effects artist Tom Savini's had already perfected gory decapitations on DAWN OF THE DEAD and FRIDAY THE 13TH - see above).
The film is also available from Warner in a set with THE HAND, DEADLY FRIEND, DR. GIGGLES, SOMEONE'S WATCHING ME, and EYES OF A STRANGER. |
