(aka 'Enigma rosso' or "Virgin Terror" or "Red Rings of Fear" or "Trauma" or "Nemesis" or "Virgin Killer")

Directed by Alberto Negrin
Italy
1978

When the brutally violated body of a young woman is found wrapped in plastic, Inspector Gianni Di Salvo (Fabio Testi - The Most Important Thing: Love, What Have You Done to Solange?) is drawn to dark deeds at an exclusive girls school where the beautiful members of a group called the Inseparables are being targeted with sinister letters and murder attempts. Following a clue in the dead girl's diary, he soon learns that anyone could be harboring deadly secrets as he untangles this web of sex and homicide. A prime slice of sordid shocks from the golden age of the Italian giallo, this is the final film in the cycle of schoolgirl thrillers following What Have You Done to Solange? with enough delirious twists and turns to keep you guessing all the way to the startling final revelation. Also starring Christine Kaufmann (Taras Bulba), Ivan Desny (The Marriage of Maria Braun, Who?), Jack Taylor (Pieces, Succubus), and Helga Liné (Horror Express, Nightmare Castle), this wicked chiller is now presented in HD and full widescreen for the very first time.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Scorpion Releasing have brought this unusual 'school-girl-in-trouble' Giallo, that is known by many different names. The Blu-ray is 'Red Rings of Fear' where the film title is 'Rings of Fear' but it is more prominently know in the genre as the Italian title 'Enigma Rosso'. This is the English 'cut' with both Italian and English language tracks and with optional English subtitles.  It is on a single-layered disc with a supportive bitrate. The condition of the film shows some vertical scratches, light speckles and some frame-specific damage (see samples below) - although they weren't overly impinging on the 1080P presentation. Rings of Fear is unlikely to get a film-level restoration so those keen to see this Giallo will have to be content with this source used for the HD transfer.

Scorpion Releasing Classics use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in both Italian and a modest English DUB. Aside from some screams there isn't an overabundance of aggression effects but is notable, audio-wise, for the score by Riz Ortolani (The Valachi Papers, Seven Deaths in the Cat's Eyes, The McKenzie Break, Day of Anger, Il Sorpasso, Woman Times Seven, Cannibal Holocaust, The Voyeur, Mondo Cane) including 'L'Intoccabile Mr. Cliff' also used in Massimo Dallamano's Mafia Junction (aka Super Bitch). It all sounds imperfect in the lossless but carries some depth and a brittle high end. Scorpion Releasing add optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray (despite the case stating that it is Region 'A'.)

Supplements include a rewarding commentary by Nathaniel Thompson (author of Delirium Volume One: The International Guide to Weird and Wonderful Films on DVD) who discusses the film as an unpredictable effort with plenty of red herrings odd and sticks in your memory. He references the performers in other Gialli and it genuinely encourages appreciation of the film. There are also some trailers.

Rings of Fear is an often tasteless
Giallo but it has some of the desirable elements of the genre as well. This late 70's Italian murder-thriller has merit and, as Nathaniel Thompson states, improves upon repeat viewings. I enjoyed it and the commentary - we can recommend this Scorpion Releasing Blu-ray to fans of this 'seductive', and often salacious, genre.
