(aka "The Defiant Ones")

Directed by Stanley Kramer
USA 19

Stanley Kramer's ground-breaking film starring Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier...

Nominated for nine Academy Awards including Best Picture, Stanley Kramer's The Defiant Ones broke new ground by delivering its message of racial tolerance through a fast-moving blend of action and suspense. It remains a raw, powerful film that is as exciting as it is moving, real and literate.

John Joker Jackson (Tony Curtis; The Vikings, Some Like It Hot) and Noah Cullen (Sidney Poitier; Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, In the Heat of the Night) are two convicts on the run. Escaping from a Southern work gang, the two men are bound together by an unbreakable iron chain and separated by an unbridled hatred towards each other. Relentlessly pursued by a bloodthirsty posse, they must put aside their differences if they are going to survive.

Highly acclaimed upon release for its directing, writing, cinematography and acting, (Sidney Poitier won numerous awards for his role, including the coveted Silver Bear for Best Actor) The Defiant Ones remains one of the most influential films of its era, and Eureka Classics is proud to present the film on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK in a special Dual Format edition.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Eureka Classics have brought us brilliant, racially-charged, crime-drama to stellar 1080P. It is on a dual-layered disc with a high bitrate. There are some speckles and light marks throughout but the contrast, texture and pleasing detail are great positives for this HD image quality. There are some imperfections but it looked very consistent in-motion exporting depth and film-like visuals.

Eureka Classics use a linear PCM 2.0 channel track (24-bit). Aside from a rifle shot and the tracking dogs there isn't excess aggression but sports another fine score by Kramer-regular Ernest Gold (Inherit the Wind, Cross of Iron, It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, On the Beach, The Secret of Santa Vittoria) and Long Gone sung a cappella by Sidney Poitier a few times in the film. It all sounds excellent in the lossless. Eureka Classics add optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region 'B' Blu-ray.

Supplements include a 20-minute interview, with the always informative, Kim Newman extolling the film and pointing out lesser-known minutia of the production. A commentary would have been warranted but there is also a trailer and the package has a reversible sleeve and second disc DVD.

The Defiant Ones is an exceptional jail-break drama exposing penetrating racial barriers. The performances are superb and the dialogue exceptional. I loved seeing this again and we can strongly recommend this Eureka
Blu-ray!
