Directed by Colinda Bongers and Thijs Meuwese
Netherlands 2017

A girl living alone in a post apocalyptic wasteland finds herself hunted down by marauders who want her to fight in their fighting pit for their entertainment.

***

Colinda Bongers and Thijs Meuwese have managed to create a fun post-apocalyptic caper, and even more impressively: they manage to surprise. From the opening moments onward, the directors pile on the brutality. What exposition there is is nasty, and the main reason we start to like Molly is that she's the only one who acts normal; everyone she meets is either a deranged zombie or a sociopathic killer. Like with Turbo Kid two years ago, ingenuity is the name of the game here. It helps that Julia Batelaan makes for an engaging and charismatic lead. De-glamorized on purpose (the glasses help), she looks nothing like a superhero, and that makes it all the more special when you see her stumble, push, shoot, stab and stomp through scores of villains...

Mad Max meets Turbo Kid in this electrifying and imaginative tale of one young woman’s determined struggle to survive in an inhospitable world. In a barren landscape ravished by war, Molly, a super-powered young woman, roams the violent post-apocalyptic landscape, armed only with a bow and arrow, to confront the dangers around her. When a sadistic ringmaster who run an underground fight club hears of her supernatural abilities he sends his sociopathic marauders to capture her and make her a star attraction in his cage fights to the death.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Artsploitation new Blu-ray appears to be shot on HD and has some impressive detail - notable in the film's many close-ups of Julia Batelaan. Colors are ultra-vibrant and they elevate the film's eye-candy in 1080P. Molly is in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio on a single-layered Blu-ray with a supportive bitrate. It has some strong golden hues and looks very pleasing in-motion.

Artsploitation provide lossy Dolby tracks in either 5.1 surround or 2.0 stereo with some separation notable in the fight sequences via the former but it is disappointing why an uncompressed transfer wasn't utilized. There is a score by Jochem Weierink that seems to suit the film's, often barren, apocalyptic aura.  Artsploitation add optional English subtitles (see sample) on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

A director's commentary is included - that I have yet to indulge, plus a Making of showing the fight choreography, location, behind the scenes footage etc. and lastly is a trailer for Molly.

I'm always up for an Post-Apocalypse flic and Molly has some merit in this genre. I was disappointed in the fight-sequences and the supporting editing which often seemed forced but I like the idea of the film and the strong-female performances of Julia Batelaan and Annelies Appelhof. The film has plenty of action but may be a 'pass' except for those keen on the genre (like moi). The Artsploitation
Blu-ray gives a solid HD video presentation and the inclusion of the director's commentary should be appreciated. These films are certainly an 'acquired taste' and I found this somewhat evocative of the self-preservations elements of Mad Max and the desperation sense of Run, Lola Run
