Directed by George Cukor

The superlative George Cukor directs a pair of genuine stars, Marilyn Monroe and Yves Montand, in a whimsical musical comedy, Let’s Make Love (1960). She plays an aspiring actress/intellectual who runs into trouble when her off-Broadway revue spoofs a stuffy French billionaire (Montand); he touchily plans to shut down the show – until, that is, he meets Monroe. Nice support is provided by Tony Randall and Frankie Vaughan, with amusing cameos from Gene Kelly, Bing Crosby, and Milton Berle; classic songs from Cole Porter are joined by newer delights from Sammy Cahn and James Van Heusen.

***

Let's Make Love is a breezy comedy about an off Broadway musical production. Jean-Marc Clement (Yves Montand) is the richest man in the world and looking for someone who loves him instead of his money. He reads in Variety he is to be satirized in the new production and tries out for the part. The producers hire him, unaware of his real identity. He hires Bing Crosby, Milton Berle and Gene Kelly to coach him for the role. Amanda (Marilyn Monroe) is the poor aspiring actress who lands a part in the play. Her opening number is the classic "My Heart Belongs To Daddy." Unaware of his fabulous wealth, she falls for the playboy billionaire during the rehearsals for the show. Tony Randall plays Montand's fussy public relations agent and tries to keep his boss from embarrassment.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

The Twilight Time 1080P transfer is in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio on another dual-layered Blu-ray with a high bitrate. The HD presentation looks quite strong - some consistent texture and a small shade of teal leaning (Marilyn's sweater) but the visuals are pleasing with consistency. The Blu-ray is solid impressive in-motion without damage or undue speckles.

Twilight Time again give the option of a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel stereo transfer at 24-bit or a very robust 5.1 surround-bump track. Sweet - there are many musical numbers in Let's Make Love including the theme "Let's Make Love" performed by Marilyn Monroe and chorus, "Hey You With Those Crazy Eyes" performed by Frankie Vaughan, Cole Porter's My Heart Belongs to Daddy by Marilyn Monroe and a few more.  There is reasonable depth exported and a pleasing buoyancy to the surround.
The score is credited to Lionel Newman (Don't Bother to Knock, The Killer is Loose, A Kiss Before Dying, Compulsion, The Boston Strangler, The Proud Ones), Earle Hagen, Cyril J. Mockridge (Mark of Zorro, Thieves' Highway, Desk Set, The Ox-Bow Incident, The Dark Corner, My Darling Clementine, Nightmare Alley) and it sounds great via the lossless. This score is also available as an isolated option fro those keen. There are optional English (SDH) subtitles on the region FREE Blu-ray disc.

Extras offer only a trailer and, as usual, Twilight always include the isolated score track option- which, in the case of this film, is a big bonus.

Let's Make Love is a fun musical with the cache of Marilyn, although it was a rough time in her personal life and she had put on a shade of weight (as leering eyes will attest.) Still a light, romantic musical that is fascinating in the ability to watch her work, even in her limited range for this role. The singing and dancing are eye-catching and the a/v presentation has plenty of value. This
Blu-ray is recommended.
