Directed by Justin Benson, Aaron Moorhead

USA 2017

Among the most exciting voices in genre cinema to emerge in recent years, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead return with their third feature, The Endless.

Benson and Moorhead play brothers, former members of a crazy UFO death cult , who receive a mysterious video cassette in the mail. The tape contains an eerie calling card from their past, inviting them to attend an event called the Ascension. Despite their apprehension, the pair agree to return for one day. At first their old friends in the cult seem warm and welcoming, but things soon turn strange as the brothers find themselves drawn into a vortex of bizarre rituals, strange messages, unseen forces and sinister supernatural secrets that threaten to tear apart the very fabric of reality.

Following on from the acclaimed Resolution also included on this limited-edition release and Spring (which earned accolades from Guillermo del Toro and Richard Linklater), The Endless is a truly unique mind-bending, genre-blending indie gem that will leave you spinning.

Comments

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Arrow's package offers High Definition (1080p) presentations of The Endless and Moorhead & Benson's first feature, Resolution on two separate, dual-layered, Blu-ray transfers. While both in the, approximate, 2.39:1 aspect ratio they look different with The Endless being dusty, fractured, vérité and earthy (not dissimilar to their Spring from 2014) while the Red One Camera-shot Resolution seeming cleaner and crisper with bolder colors. BTW, I really liked the second Blu-ray film, and Wikipedia states "The Endless may be interpreted as a partial sequel to the Benson and Moorhead's earlier film, Resolution, as it appears to share the same creative universe and some plot points." Justin Benson, Aaron Moorhead have made two curious films, somewhat reminiscent of the TV series Lost with mysteries building upon each other and not always resolved.  With The Endless Blu-ray sporting a max'ed out bitrate and Resolution - a very high video transfer rate, I can only presume that these are strong replications of the original theatrical appearance.

The audio transfer for both are robust DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround tracks - 24-bit - in the original English language. While the films have some dramatic, intense, effects, there is a lot of passivity in the dialogue-driven narrative. It tends to accentuate the explosive effects to a higher degree when they are utilized. Jimmy Lavalle (who composed for Benson + Moorhead's 2014's Spring) that remains supportive on the film's undercurrent of tension. Resolution has Resident Peasant's The Little Ones Aren't Prepared and Karl Kerfoot, Dan Martinez, Jake Reed's Stoneback Ridge with the film almost exclusively shot with footage from a secluded part of the Sycona Indian Reservation and the estate of Nakoshi Saki with thanks to the Croatian Film Commission. Arrow add optional English (SDH) subtitles on both discs that are Region 'B' Blu-ray-locked.

Arrow include a wealth of supplements that incorporate some of the cast/crew sense of humor. On The Endless we get an audio commentary by the filmmakers discussing the production, it's conception in a relaxed tone, things that might have been done differently - and I found it rewarding. Also on the first Blu-ray there are also a brand-new 1/4 hour interview with Benson and Moorhead, recorded exclusively for this release, a 1/2 hour behind-the-scenes featurette, some short video pieces including practical jokes, casting characters, a VFX Breakdown looking at before and after blue/green screen effects, a UFO Cult Comedy improvised short film, Vinny's Story, a behind-the-scenes documentary filmed on-set by Curran and a Michael Felker, a tongue-in-cheek featurette referencing The Endless's editor. There are also seven deleted scenes, Outtakes and a theatrical trailer.

On the Second Blu-ray there are three audio commentaries for Resolution, the first is a group effort with Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, and actors Peter Cilella and Vinny Curran, a second with only Benson and Moorhead and a third (more humor) with Carmel the Dog in tow and you can hear the occasional whimpers and jingling dog tags. Arrow have a brand-new 17-minute interview with Benson and Moorhead, recorded exclusively for this release plus a brief archival interview with Benson and Moorhead and six short 'Weird' extras including an alternative ending, outtakes and unseen footage plus there is 23-minutes of Film festival promos. The package contains a reversible sleeve with a choice of artwork designs and a limited edition collector's booklet containing new writing on the films by critics Jamie Graham and Alexandra Heller-Nicholas.

There is so much to like about this grassroots cinema - simplicity gravitating to unanswerable questions - engaging, real, characters and, as I said, while I enjoyed both, a saw a spark of impressive filmmaking in Resolution. Arrow's Blu-ray package has plenty of value. A great double feature night in the home theatre. Strongly recommended!

Directed by Justin Benson, Aaron Moorhead

USA 2012

Upon receiving a disturbing online video of his best friend drunk and wildly firing guns into the air, Michael (Peter Cilella) heads out to find his troubled buddy Chris (Vinny Curran) and get him some help. Chris has holed himself up in an unfinished cabin located on a Native American reservation. When the drugged-out dude refuses to leave, Michael handcuffs him to a pipe and forces him to go through withdrawal. Meanwhile, Michael discovers a load of abandoned electrical equipment nearby, and strange visitors start appearing at their door -- along with troubling videotapes that portend bad things for the two friends. Directed by Aaron Scott Moorhead and Justin Benson, Resolution played at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival.
