France / Canada 1978

Isabelle Huppert (12-time César Award nominee for Best Actress) stars in an award-winning performance based on the true story of Violette Nozière. The daughter of a respectable middle-class couple, Violette leads a disreputable double life. Far from being the innocent young girl her parents mistake her for, she spends her nights with dissolute young men in the less than savory areas of Paris. To acquire money for her latest lover, Violette resolves to murder her parents so that she can inherit their wealth.

Comments:

Not again! Of the 34 English Friendly Claude Chabrol DVD's available, amazingly many are of poor quality. Four of them are so bad that one could question the morality of the distributor: Docteur Popaul, Dr. M (German DVD's), Blood Relatives (UK), and now Violette Nozière (US / KochLorber).

KochLorber's DVD of VIOLETTE is taken from an old analog tape-master made from an used film copy. The credit sequence is cropped to 1:1.57, the rest to 1:1.33. The film should most probably be in 1:1.66. The image is soft, the black levels are blocked, and there's color bleeding, to name some of the faults. It's amazing that this kind of DVD find it's way to stores in 2007.

I can recommend this DVD only for hard Chabrol fans, who can't wait for a better English friendly transfer.

NOTE:
There's coming a French DVD from TF1 Vidéo on 7 June 2007 HERE, but I have no clue of the quality or if it has English subtitles.
