Berlin, the early 1990s. Strange fatal accidents are happening in the city, on both sides of the wall. Lt. Hartmann investigates and discovers that they are suicides induced by enigmatic Doctor Marsfeldt. The man heads a criminal organization disguised as a vacation club that intends to carry out a crazy eugenics project through subliminal messages sent by images of a beautiful woman, Sonja.

Dr. M stresses the fact that we are continuously manipulated – Saddam Hussein patting the heads of the children of the hostages is a striking example – and that political speak has invaded every circle (for example, the last message of my announcer). This is why, faced with steely-hearted strategy experts and computer brains, I hope that my film will be stimulating, since it does homage to lucidity as our only defensive weapon.” (C. Chabrol, “Le Figaro,” 11-21-1990)

Comments:

An other extremely weak German DVD of a Chabrol film. The worst thing with the old source material is, that there is a constant Analogue Tape Tracking Error. The imagine is unstable and wavering all the time. The overall appearance is similar to old VHS cassettes. The image seems also a little bit cropped on the both edges.

The English sound track seems to be the original. At least the lip sync matchup. The sound is narrow, but is clean from damage.
