(aka "Blue Jeans")

Directed by Philip Dunne
USA 195

Writer-director Philip Dunne, collaborating with Edith Sommer on an adaptation of James Leo Herlihy and William Noble’s play, brings us Blue Denim (1959), an echt-Fifties “issue movie” about a pair of teenagers (Carol Lynley, Brandon de Wilde) who find themselves facing the horror of an unwed, unwanted pregnancy. These are “good kids,” for whom things go wrong, to the dismay of parents, friends, educators, all of whom, somehow, have failed to educate these children: babies having babies, indeed. Highlighted by a score from the singular Bernard Herrmann.

***

Arthur (Brandon de Wilde) and Janet (Carol Lynley) are two teenagers in love. But their careless romance is thrown into jeopardy when Janet gets pregnant. They try to broach the matter with their emotionally remote parents, but are unable to make any headway. Arthur and Janet even try to get married -- but are turned away for being too young. As their window of opportunity narrows, Arthur begins the search for someone who can perform an illegal abortion.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

The Twilight Time 1080P image quality is excellent. This was another Twentieth Century Fox production and the source has strong density - the contrast is excellent and it exports pleasing detail. The Blu-ray visuals are excellent in-motion. Another very impressive HD presentation, of a black and white 50's film, by Twilight Time. Great job!

Blue Denim had a 4-Track Stereo (Westrex Recording System) theatrically and Twilight Time again give the option of a robust DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround transfer (24-bit) or a similar encode in 2.0 channel stereo. I didn't notice much separation and what was there was only subtle - as per the film's requirement. The lossless easily handles the
uncharacteristically gentle score by the great Bernard Herrmann (Beneath the 12-Mile Reef, Cape Fear, The Magnificent Ambersons, Taxi Driver, The Wrong Man, etc. etc.) that is also offered as an isolated option. There are optional English subtitles on the region FREE Blu-ray disc.

No extras aside from the isolated score option, a trailer, and some liner notes by Julie Kirgo. This seems like a missed opportunity as the film is very deserved of some discussion - or a new commentary reflecting how different, and similar, the themes of the film are portrayed today.

I feel privileged - this is a wonderful film! Carol Lynley (repeating her stage role), Brandon De Wilde, Macdonald Carey, Marsha Hunt are all fabulous and Philip Dunne does an impressive job of representing this sensitive, curious age and the environment and challenges surrounding youth, friends and the parents. A score by Herrmann. I was blown away.  The HD presentation is great and this
Blu-ray, and especially the film, are both absolutely recommended!
