Directed by Rainer Sarnet

One of the most inventive, magical, and also exceedingly funny films of recent international cinema, November evokes influences as varied as Guy Maddin and The Brothers Grimm, Bela Tarr and Jan Svankmajer, while also remaining wholly and deliriously original. It's unlike anything else you've ever seen and that's even if you've seen a bunch of black-and-white Estonian fairy tale films.

Young Lina and Hans are preparing to marry in their village in the woods, when Hans becomes entranced by the arrival of a visiting baroness. Love spells are conjured so that each receives their intended mate, but there are more sinister things afoot. Death can visit in the form of a farm animal...but it's fine because one can hide by wearing trousers on the head. And, besides, the dead can come back to the village and chat anyway...although when the devil arrives, don't try to cheat him. And then there are the "kratts" supernatural servants made from discarded bones, tree branches, and trash...just make sure to give them work to do, or else.

Director Rainer Sarnet's unique, hypnotic, and whimsical film has been a smash at film festivals, and once you fall under its spell, you'll see why. A contemporary film already destined for multiple viewings and passionate cults, November will be haunting your dreams and tickling your funny bone for years to come.

***

In this surreal fantasy film set in a 19th century Estonian village beset by spirits, shape-shifters, and the plague, a young peasant named Liina (Rea Lest) longs for her friend Hans (Jörgen Liik), who is himself obsessed with a visiting baroness (Jette Loona Hermanis). Directed by Rainer Sarnet, November is based on the novel Rehepapp by Andrus Kivirähk.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Eureka (Montage Pictures) Blu-ray (May 2019): "November" now comes to us on Blu-ray, from Eureka Entertainment. This is a dual-layered disc with a beautifully maxed-out bitrate throughout the film's presentation. I saw this film last year on a streaming service, and this Blu-ray presentation is leaps and bounds superior, image-wise. The 1.78:1 Black & White photography has a clarity that proves that physical media is just as vital as ever. While the streaming service had a bitrate hovering around 7 or 8 Mbps, here it is closer to 35 Mbps, creating a much smoother and less blurry picture. Another benefit of this disc is the increased contrast. Gone are the streaming pixelations and strange greys where there should be blacks. "November" is a film of stunning cinematography, which only enhances the story's fabulism.

There is only one audio option on this
Blu-ray, and thankfully it is an uncompressed linear PCM Audio track (albeit in 16-bit). The eerie, ethereal and sometimes electric sounding score is thanks to Michal Jacaszek, known for electroacoustic music that combines electronically prepared sounds with acoustic instruments. There are also moments of trees rustling, wind howling, mysterious whisperings, that even in a 2.0 track create a sense of surroundings. There are optional English subtitles on this Region 'B' locked Blu-ray from Eureka!

The
Blu-ray's sole extras are the film's theatrical trailer and the festival trailer. There is also a collector's booklet featuring a new essay by film critic and writer Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, though I did not have the pleasure of reading this, due to us only being sent a screener copy without the finished booklet. The package has a second disc DVD included.

"November" (based on Estonian novel "Rehepapp" by Andrus Kivirähk) is a wildly unique film, full of metaphysical magic realism. The cinematography is some of the finest that I have seen in years, with a keen sense of lighting and mise-en-scene. I have been recommending this film to friends and family since I saw it a while ago on streaming media, this
Blu-ray will now be my recommendation as the A/V is better in every regard. Please check this film out on Blu-ray. No extras (other than the 2 trailers), but don't let that deter you.
