(aka "Robotrix" or "Nu ji xie ren")

Directed by Jamie Luk
Hong Kong 1991

From the heady days of early 90s Hong Kong exploitation cinema comes Robotrix, a hi-octane, fast and furious science fiction romp, packed with glorious action sequences and bonkers plotlines. When evil inventor Ryuichi Sakamato (Chung Lin) transfers his mind into that of a powerful cyborg, he becomes a murderer and rapist. But when one of his victims, Police officer Selena Lin (Chikako Aoyama) becomes super robot Eve-27, she teams up with android sidekick Ann (Amy Yip) and together they seek to bring the criminally insane scientist to justice.

Like a crazy mix of The Terminator (1981), The Power Rangers and of course, Robocop (1987) Robotrix, combines the mad doctor movie with extreme martial arts to deliver a sexy, seductive, bionic tale of lust and violence given a uniquely Asian futuristic spin.

***

A mad scientist transfers his mind to a wicked robot, which then embarks on a program of kidnapping, rape and murder, during which a female detective is killed. To fight the robot, the police woman's corpse is then made into a robotrix.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: 88 Films Blu-ray (April 2024): 88 Films have transferred Jamie Luk's Category III film Robotrix to Blu-ray. It is cited as being an "UNCUT HD restoration in original 1:85:1 aspect ratio". It has a few image inconsistencies with portions looking darker with faded contrast. It is on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. There was a LE edition, HERE, that is now OOP (out of print) and this is the standard Blu-ray edition. Much of the 1080P visuals are sharp and appealing.

NOTE: We have added 54 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, 88 Films offer linear PCM 2.0 channel track (16-bit) in both the original Cantonese and an English language DUB. Robotrix has some choreographed fighting and sci-fi related effects. They are modest and the dialogue is somewhat clouded in both languages. It's audible but not ideal. The score was credited to James Wong (Once Upon a Time in China, A Chinese Ghost Story, Peking Opera Blues) and Siu Hung Yeung (only credit), adding modestly to the film via the lossless transfer. 88 Films offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'B'-locked Blu-ray.

The 88 Films Blu-ray offers a new commentary by Asian cinema experts Mike Leeder (editor of 100% Jackie Chan: The Essential Companion) and Arne Venema. They consider it a ultimate Category III film, discuss extra actors Mark King, Ken Goodman, Fung Woo and others, comparisons to The Terminator or a sexy version of Robocop. They are enthusiastic and fun with some anecdotal stories. Another worthy spin. Other extras include a short introduction with director Jamie Luk and there are 9-minutes of scenes from the alternative version with the statement: "The following footage is extensions or substitutions in the Mandarin-language version of Robotrix that was released in both Singapore and Taiwan, itself edited compared with the Hong Kong version." The supplements include an English language title sequences, Hong Kong and English trailers and the package has a reversible sleeve with original Hong Kong poster artwork and brand-new artwork from R.P. "Kung Fu Bob" O'Brien.

Jamie Luk's Robotrix is more Hong Kong Category III sexploitation including large bare breasts, distasteful assaults including bondage and forced fellatio. The gals; Amy Yip (Anna), Chikako Aoyama (Linda) and Siu-dan Hui (Dr. Sara), are titillating - the latter two certainly fully naked and more. Miss Yip has prodigious use of the 'Yip Tease' (discrete camera angles, and careful editing to contractually hide anything as graphic as nipples or public hair.) Of the three Yip fan favorites; Sex and Zen, Erotic Ghost Story, and Robotrix - this would be my least favorite. I feel like they missed an obvious plot opportunity to use the unique skills of the female robots combined with the obvious sex theme - both humorously and erotically. The action is quite intense with many dead bodies piled up thanks to Sakamoto's nasty, machismo, robot. Mostly silly stuff building a weak plot around robots and boobs. The 88 Films Blu-ray is a good package for Miss Yip's die-hard fans. Everyone else might consider passing.
