The score, alongside the broader soundscape - pop or dance music by Crowander, The Skyler Hagner Big Band, De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig, INXS, George Michael, BadBadNotGood, Le Tigre, Yellow Claw, Stoltenhoff & Police in Paris etc. - creates an immersive auditory experience that mirrors Romy’s internal turmoil and the escalating tension of her affair. The soundtrack is characterized by a blend of pulsating electronic beats, crisp separations, and dissonant, ambient tones, crafting an atmosphere that feels both seductive and unsettling. The score’s rhythmic intensity - often low, throbbing basslines - underscores moments of eroticism and danger, particularly in Romy and Samuel’s intimate encounters, amplifying the push-pull of attraction and risk. Like the video the lossless sound quality is without flaw. Overall, the sound of Babygirl is a dynamic, textured layer that enriches its storytelling. De Veer’s score, paired with a meticulous sound design, creates a sonic identity that’s as provocative and complex as the film itself, immersing viewers in Romy’s psychological and emotional landscape with every beat and breath. She shares anecdotes, like filming on A24’s office roof, and reflects on personal influences, such as the infamous milk scene, making it a rich companion for those seeking a deeper understanding of her vision. The dozen-minute “Directing Desire with Halina Reijn” featurette offers a concise look at why Reijn pursued this story. While brief, it highlights her motivations and directorial choices, serving as a teaser for the more expansive commentary. It’s a focused snapshot that underscores her intent to reinvigorate the erotic thriller genre with a feminist lens. "Power Looks: Dressing the Cast of Babygirl" is a 10-minute video piece featuring costume designers Kurt & Bart, is a highlight for its detailed examination of the film’s visual identity. It goes beyond surface-level discussion, exploring how Romy’s tailored suits and Samuel’s casual attire reflect their power dynamic and emotional states. This featurette elevates the costumes from mere wardrobe to narrative tools, offering a fascinating glimpse into the craft. There are deleted scenes included but feel appropriately excised, reinforcing the film’s tight final cut. I'm a huge Kidman fan - one of the better actresses of her generation - and was thrilled to obtain and own this A24 4K UHD. A fascinating film and brilliant home theatre package that we can whole-heartedly recommend.
