Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Imprint Blu-ray (March 2024): Imprint have transferred Diane Kurys' A Man in Love to Blu-ray. It has minor issues with a few teal instances and can appear a bit artifact-y. Primary colors are rich and deep. There is as hade of depth and generally looked decent, and mostly pleasing, on my system - possibly because of DoP Bernard Zitzermann's adept use of the widescreen and mise en scène.

NOTE: We have added 50 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Imprint use a linear PCM 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the original English language. A Man in Love has few aggressive moments - some emotional outbursts from Coyote - but notable is the score by Georges Delerue (One Deadly Summer, Mister Johnson, Jules et Jim, The Woman Next Door, Cartouche, The Last Metro, Day For Night) supporting the film graciously in the lossless transfer. Imprint offer optional English subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Imprint Blu-ray offers a new commentary by film critic Alexandra Heller-Nicholas (author of 1000 Women In Horror, 1895-2018.) She talks about why Diane Kurys (she pronounces 'Dee-Anne') is not better known - that A Man in Love struggled to find an audience, she quotes Peter Coyote about the film and a 2000 article in The Modern Language Review by Susan Hayward about Kurys being a difficult and contradictory director to categorize because of her both populist and auteur leanings, and Alexandra explores other critical voices about the director's career and how A Man in Love flits in. It's at her informative standard with astute observations and worth a listen.

Diane Kurys' A Man in Love has handsome movie star Steve Elliott (Peter Coyote) in a predictably doomed, and clandestine, affair with co-star Jane Steiner (Greta Scacchi.) He constantly gazes at the striking 26-year old - the way most me in the world would. It's a classy and occasionally erotic drama - their love scenes, her nudity and a playful lesbian fantasy all expressed tastefully - with BBFC shaming. The Rome backdrop cinematography and lilting score augment these two beautiful people falling together. Intentionally it shows a superficiality in Hollywood's industry condoning adultery perpetrated on suspicious, shrewish, wife (Jamie Lee Curtis.) Wonderful to see Claudia Cardinale almost 'passing the torch' to Scacchi's celluloid male-hypnotism. Some may view A Man in Love as embracing a lack of obvious depth - however I see, all too subtle, markers that lend themselves away from a standard mainstream soap opera. I liked it well enough. A Man in Love, the auteur-tagged director's first English language effort, was not lauded - with unfair accusations of Kurys selling-out. I don't think so but... even only that has value. Perhaps critical expectations were too 'arthouse'. The Imprint Blu-ray has the lesser-seen film in 1080P and another solid commentary from Heller-Nicholas.
