(aka "Petualangan Cinta Nyi Blorong" or "The Hungry Snake Woman" or "The Snake Queen's Love Adventures")

Directed by Sisworo Gautama Putra
Indonesia 1986

Burhan (Advent Bangun) fled the authorities through the jungles after his abusive treatment of his now-ex Carlita (Nina Anwar). His flight brings him into the path of the mystical Snake Queen (Suzzanna), who promises to deliver him the riches and power that he had always craved. All that's required, however, is for him to slay three women in the course of a week... and feast on their blood and flesh. Bizarre horror offering from Indonesia also stars George Rudy.

Burhan, desperate for wealth and glory, decides to visit the Snake Woman, a mysterious and powerful deity who can confer instant riches on those who obey her commands. She tells Burhan he must kill three women, feast on their blood and eat their breasts. Transformed into Dracula, with cloak and fangs, he sets off on his mission. One killing is all he can take before abandoning the task. He encounters Nyi Lajang, the Snake Woman’s enemy, a half human/half snake creature. Nyi Lajang offers Burhan a way out of his contract with the Snake Woman. She gives him a silver pin that he must stab Snake Woman with during sex while she is in human form. This will turn her back into a snake and neutralize all her magical powers. This is what Burhan does. But his problems are far from over...

One of the wildest and craziest Indonesian horror films ever made, Hungry Snake Woman is a phantasmagorical ride through a world of cannibal slave maidens, chainsaw wielding heroes, a possessed go-go dancer, exploding rib cages, bizarre black magic spells, a dash of kung fu fighting, buckets of gore, and even a little bit of sex, featuring the legendary Suzzanna, Indonesia’s “queen of horror.”

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Mondo Macabro Blu-ray (February 2025): Mondo Macabro have transferred Sisworo Gautama Putra's The Hungry Snake Woman to Blu-ray. It is on a single-layered Blu-ray disc with a high bitrate. It looks reasonably consistent showcasing the film's limited budget generated effects, costumes and sets. The transfer is clean and quiet effective in producing a pleasing HD presentation.

On their Blu-ray, Mondo Macabro offer DTS-HD Master dual-mono tracks (24-bit) in the original Indonesian language and, defaulting to, an English DUB. They are a few unremarkable effects - mostly with lighting. Unfortunately, specific information regarding the composer of the music for this film is somewhat difficult to find in widely available sources. However, based on the standard production credits of Indonesian filmographies of the time, there is no composer explicitly mentioned for this film in any official catalogue or documented reviews. In general, for Indonesian films of the 1980s such as this, the music was often composed by local composers working with the production house, in this case PT Soraya Intercine Film. However, even with access to the full credits (where no person is attributed) or original production documents, it is difficult to ascertain who was responsible for the music. The DUB isn't fatally poor and adds to the camp appeal of the film. Mondo Macabro offer optional English (translated not DUB-titles) subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Mondo Macabro Blu-ray offers no commentary (which might have filled in many gaps about production, cast, score etc.) - no extras at all.

"The Hungry Snake Woman" is the international title for the 1986 film "Petualangan Cinta Nyi Blorong". It is a classic Indonesian horror film directed by Sisworo Gautama Putra. The film stars Suzzanna - known as the "Queen of Indonesian horror", she is well-known in particular in Indonesia for portraying spirits, witches, and other supernatural beings playing titular Nyi Blorong (the "Snake Woman") here. She was working alongside actors such as Advent Bangun (Langganan), George Rudy (Deadly Angels Strike Back,) and Nina Anwar (Virgins from Hell.) The story is a sequel to the 1982 film "Nyi Blorong" ("The Snake Queen") combining elements of horror, bizarre fantasy, and a bit of romance. The focus starts with Burhan (Advent Bangun), a selfish man who becomes poor after failing to marry Karlina (Nina Anwar), the daughter of the employer who fired him. In an effort to get rich quickly, Burhan searches for Nyi Blorong, a mystical figure in the form of a beautiful woman with supernatural powers. On his journey, he meets Nila (a snake woman) who turns out to be cursed by Nyi Blorong and asks Burhan to take revenge by stabbing the snake Queen with a magic hairpin after sexually satisfying her. However, when the hairpin is pulled out, Nyi Blorong returns to human form. As payment and in order to worship the snake Queen, Burhan literally transforms into a representation of Dracula (yes, that's right a vampire,) complete with cloak and fangs, and must kill three women, drink their blood and then devour their breasts... of course. Pure camp hilarity. The cultural aspects are some of the most strident and I captured a half-dozen characters awkwardly pointing in the film (see below.)  I am quite pleased with Mondo Macabro's bare-bones Blu-ray. It is definitely the most delightfully unusual I have seen in years and the 1982 original "The Snake Queen" is on my 'to watch' list.
