Directed by Gordon Hessler
USA 1973

Screen great Bette Davis (All About Eve, Burnt Offerings) stars in Scream, Pretty Peggy, a made-for-TV creepfest crafted in the grand tradition of Hitchcock’s Psycho. College student and aspiring artist Peggy (Sian Barbara Allen, Billy Two Hats) takes a housekeeping job at a mansion where sculptor Jeffrey (Ted Bessell, TV’s That Girl) lives with his elderly mother (the diabolical Ms. Davis). Things get strange when Peggy discovers a third resident: Jeffrey’s hopelessly insane sister. Horror maven Gordon Hessler (The Oblong Box, Scream and Scream Again) directed this atmospheric shocker, co-written by Jimmy Sangster (Horror of Dracula, Whoever Slew Auntie Roo?) and co-starring Charles Drake (Back Street) and Allan Arbus (TV’s M*A*S*H).

***

A sculptor hires young college girls to take care of his elderly mother and his supposedly insane sister, both of whom live in the old family mansion with him.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (October 2021): Kino have transferred the TV film, Gordon Hessler's, Scream, Pretty Peggy to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "Brand New 2K Master". It looks very strong in 1080P - filmed in 35mm. Detail is adept, colors rich but true and frequent depth. The inconsistencies seem a direction function of the speedy production limitations. This was a made-for-TV movie so you're seeing more then television sets would have shown 50-years ago. It has a high bitrate. Hopefully the captures below will give you and idea of the quality.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (16-bit) in the original English language. Scream, Pretty Peggy has rare aggressive moments - and only one scream by lead Sian Barbara Allen. It's fairly passive with a score by Robert Prince (Columbo, Newman's Law, and many TV credits including Peppard's Banacek) sounding supportive if unremarkable in the lossless transfer. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary by Troy Howarth and Nathaniel Thompson. They discuss the crossovers from The Night Gallery series. They talk about the writer Jimmy Sangster and the two Hammer films written by him that starred Bette Davis (The Nanny, The Anniversary). Nathaniel relates that Scream, Pretty Peggy was shot in under a week, the film's intentional misconceptions, how they were cranking these 'ABC Movies of the Week' out regularly at the time, and the entire cast is discussed with references to their other work, Don Chandler sculptures etc.. It is filled with knowledge. There is also a TV Spot and the package has a slipcase with artwork by Vince Evans.

Scream, Pretty Peggy probably doesn't rate the nasty Hagsploitation moniker (or softer 'Grande Dame Guignol') although it does have Bette Davis commanding the scenes she's in - only 65 at the time and only ever seen wearing a nightgown, always with the bright red lipstick. This wasn't horrible and Bette is definitely part of the appeal. Short, shocking and modestly entertaining depending on your mood. The Kino Blu-ray has a good a/v and the commentary is well worth the spin. Recommended - more to Davis fans and those who nostalgically appreciate 70's TV horrors!
