Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: A24 Blu-ray (January 2025): A24 have transferred John Crowley's We Live in Time to Blu-ray. There is also a special edition available direct from A24, HERE, with, what we presume to be, the same 1080P transfer. It is in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. The resulting image looks pristine, spotlessly clean with authentic colors - perhaps as shade of teal-leaning. It looks about as solid as any modern film might - adeptly transferred to this HD presentation format. There are instances of depth and well rendered contrast.

On their Blu-ray, A24 offer the option of a Dolby Atmos 7.1 surround track or a Dolby 5.1 surround track. There are a few quasi-aggressive effects - a car-accident, chef competition etc. The Atmos adds some depth and a few discreet separations. The delicate and emotional score was by Bryce Dessner (The Revenant.) He is an American composer and guitarist based in Paris, and a member of the Indie rock band The National, along with his twin brother, Aaron. It suits the film's moods beautifully. Romy (Romy Madley Croft) and Sampha (Sampha Sisay) performed the film's credits song, "I'm on Your Team". You can hear other music in the film performed by Merrell and the Exiles, The Housemartins, The xx, Chris Brain, Wolf Alice, Villagers, John Martyn, Bahamas, Olly Alexander (Years & Years), Avicii, and Gemma Kicks. A24 offer optional English or Spanish subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

NOTE: For Atmos - many non-compliant systems will recognizes it as TrueHD 7.1, but from Wikipedia: "Because of limited bandwidth and lack of processing power, Atmos in home theaters is not a real-time mix rendered the same way as in cinemas. The substream is added to Dolby TrueHD or Dolby Digital Plus. This substream only represents a losslessly encoded fully object-based mix. This substream does not include all 128 objects separated. This is not a matrix-encoded channel, but a spatially-encoded digital channel. Atmos in home theaters can support 24.1.10 channel, but it is not an object-based real-time rendering. Filmmakers need to remix and render the TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus soundtracks with Dolby Media Producer."

The A24 Blu-ray offers a new commentary by director John Crowley (Boy A, Is Anybody There?, Closed Circuit, Brooklyn) and writer Nick Payne (Wanderlust, The Sense of an Ending, The Last Letter from Your Lover). They recall locations, discuss the bookending of the film, John first impression of the story, the non-linear timeline, the illness, the child's birth, how Andrew Garfield got involved, the chemistry between him and Florence Pugh plus much more about the production, it's evolution, hurdles circumvented and it's full of details about the creative process in making We Live in Time. Included is a 10-minute 'making-of' featurette where Garfield and Pugh discuss their involvement and impressions the story and production. Lastly, the "Special Edition" Blu-ray has six collectible postcards featuring set photography by Peter Mountain.

John Crowley's We Live in Time floats around with a decidedly nonlinear structure. I thought this worked rather well in expressing a memory-based quality with flashbacks of happy or struggling times in a loving relationship. The film is emotional, without being cloying and has a playful spirit. Andrew Garfield (The Social Network, The Amazing Spider-Man, Hacksaw Ridge) plays Weetabix representative Tobias Durand - who is finalizing a divorce when he meets Almut Brühl (Florence Pugh - Oppenheimer, The Boy and the Heron, Dune: Part Two) a former figure skater turned Bavarian-fusion chef. These uniquely specific jobs add a less-serious layer. We Live in Time captures the essence of a couple deeply in love - with delicate and tactful practicality - without being painfully melodramatic, yet it has a touching, heartfelt core. The performances are excellent. My wife and I enjoyed it quite a lot. Some have reflected on the similarity to 1970's 'Love Story' but this is a different expression - especially with the non-linear narrative. We Live in Time carries a very desirable cinematic purity to it. I am pleased to have seen it and appreciate the A24 Blu-ray which will be a keeper. Enjoy this one!
