ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): I was impressed by so much this week. Masters of Cinema provide us with 2 brilliant western Blu-ray packages - George Stevens' Shane get the full treatment with three 'framings' including theatrical 1.66:1 and André De Toth's, often underrated, Day of the Outlaw also goes Blu-ray for a fabulous viewing experience. I also thoroughly enjoyed Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay! via Kino Lorber, max'ed out, Blu-ray with 2 commentaries. A strong recommendation! The Crooked Way may be on bare-bones Blu-ray but it's enough for most fans of the dark cinema. Brian Trenchard-Smith's The Siege of Firebase Gloria is a superior and unforgettable 'Nam flic - probably the best I have seen on such a limited budget. Artificial Eye bring us Gaspar Noé's arthouse sexbomb Love (2-D) to Blu-ray - not for the prudish. Arrow stack their Blood Rage Blu-ray for both sides of the pond with 3 HD versions of the another gruesome slice of the 80s slasher genre. Nanni Moretti's Mia Madre is an elegant, understated, and discreetly moving film - and available on Blu-ray. One Eyed Girl is an effective psychological thriller - and the new Blu-ray offers significant value. While John Frankenheimer's The Fourth War isn't the director's best work - it's still a damn good Cold-war drama starring Roy Scheider and Jürgen Prochnow. I think David Cronenberg's A History of Violence is one of his best but the EiV Blu-ray from the UK doesn't advance upon the marginal US release.. No DVD coverage again this week. ..:"Calling it your job don't make it right, boss." - Cool Hand Luke. Christmas is approaching like a freight train - have a 'preparatory' week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Shane BD - George Stevens (Giant) made a remarkable contribution to the western lore with his film 'Shane'. The screenplay was based on Jack Schaefer's successful 1949 book of the same name and the film received six Academy Awards nominations: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Brandon de Wilde), Best Supporting Actor (Jack Palance), Best Director, Best Screenplay (by A. B. Guthrie, Jr.), and Best Color Cinematography, and won its sole Oscar award for photographer Loyal Griggs. We seem abandoned in the late 1880s, settlers struggling for a new life and having each other as the only support mechanism. Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Release date: November 30th, 2015

The Siege of Firebase Gloria BD - The flick is populated with all the war film stereotypes: Hauser's Di Nardo is the on-the-edge soldier with a decent streak running through him. "Sharp eye and a good nose for trouble," and entirely capable of going mental at the drop of a hat. Ermey is the career Marine, full of insults and wisdom, a great deal of which he probably drew from his own experiences (he and Trenchard-Smith were responsible for the additional dialogue). Blu-ray Release date: December 8th, 2015

Love (2-D) BD - First things first: Yes, Gaspar Noé's arthouse sexbomb quite literally goes off in your face, with an ejaculation close-up 90 minutes in that might have you wiping off your 3-D glasses. You might think that's an impressive provocation, until you recall that every twelve-year-old boy in America sees that same thing in private at least once a day. Noé's other visions will be less familiar to that hand-in-pants audience: exquisite long-take shots of lovers stroking, sucking, and bubbling over. Blu-ray Release date: January 11th, 2016

Day of the Outlaw BD - Robert Ryan plays the ruthless cattleman Blaise Starrett who rides into the small, snowbound town of Bitters to settle a feud with homesteader Hal Crane (Alan Marshal) over access to land, with one eye on rekindling a past love affair with Crane's wife Helen (Tina Stuart). But once a band of brutal outlaws, led by the notorious Captain Jack Bruhn (Burl Ives), enters and takes the townspeople hostage, the situation becomes a powder keg ready to blow. Blu-ray Release date: December 7th, 2015

Salaam Bombay! BD - Forced to leave his family at a very young age, Krishna (Shafiq Syed) lives on the streets with pimps, prostitutes, drug addicts and other homeless children. He earns very little money but it s more than most delivering tea so he can return home to his family. But his honest plan is foiled when his hard-earned money is stolen by his closest friend, forcing Krishna to follow in the footsteps of so many street children of Bombay...by turning to a life of crime. Blu-ray Release date: December 8th, 2015

The Fourth War BD - The Fourth War finds director John Frankenheimer delving into the same Cold-war territory he'd previously cultivated in films like The Manchurian Candidate. Col. Jack Knowles (Roy Scheider), serving at a faraway post on the German-Czech border, carries on a personal war with his Soviet counterpart, Colonel Valachev (Jurgen Prochnow). Both have been hardened by past combat experiences, and both have been embittered by the exigencies of red tape, bureaucracy, and diplomatic deal-making. Their friendly rivalry snowballs (literally so!) into a guerilla-like combat situation, culminating in a one-on-one showdown. Blu-ray Release date: December 8th, 2015

One Eyed Girl BD - Travis, a young psychiatrist, is haunted by the suicide of one of his patients. On the brink of a nervous breakdown, Travis meets Grace, a representative of a secret church that promises salvation to even the most troubled of its members. Intrigued by both the alluring Grace and the possibility of redemption, Travis joins the church and meets its leader, the charismatic Father Jay. At first skeptical, Travis eventually is indoctrinated into the church's sometimes radical practices and becomes a believer in the utopian world Father Jay promises to provide. But when a series of tragedies befalls Father Jay and his flock, Travis and his fellow members' trust is shaken to its core. Now Travis must decide if his loyalty truly lies with Father Jay, the ever-elusive Grace, or himself. Featuring standout performances from each member of its talented cast, ONE EYED GIRL is a dark thriller filled with tension and dread that will haunt you long after the final frame. Blu-ray Release date: December 8th, 2015

Blood Rage BD - Twins Todd and Terry seem like sweet boys that is, until one of them takes an axe to face of a fellow patron at the local drive-in. Todd is blamed for the bloody crime and institutionalised, whilst twin brother Terry goes free. Ten years later and, as the family gathers around the table for a Thanksgiving meal, the news comes in that Todd has escaped. But has the real killer in fact been in their midst all along? One thing's for sure, there will be blood and rage! Blu-ray Release date: December 15th, 2015

Mia Madre BD - Set in present-day Rome, the story follows Margherita, a filmmaker attempting to balance her work with her family life. Pulled between the demands of a difficult Hollywood actor (John Turturro, in a scene-stealing role), her teenage daughter and the slow decline of her mother’s health, she finds herself struggling to hold everything together. But much like the director’s profession itself, she must stay in control right until the final call. Blu-ray Release date: December 7th, 2015

The Crooked Way BD - 1949's "The Crooked Way" is an obscure but highly enjoyable film noir, with some of the most stylish noir photography and lighting I've ever seen. This is because the cinematography was handled by the legendary John Alton, the most recognized and respected name in film noir cinematography. To be honest, I've never thought of John Payne as a great actor. However, with his gloomy, cynical personality and his frequent frowning, he was perfect for film noir, and appeared in several classics besides this one ("Kansas City Confidential", "Slightly Scarlet", "99 River Street", "Hell's Island"). With sharp dialogue, a well-crafted and fast-paced plot, and amazing cinematography, "The Crooked Way" is a great film noir that deserves a better reputation. Blu-ray Release Date: December 8th, 2015

A History of Violence BD - Though he avoids platitudes, David Cronenberg is a troubled moralist who lingers over cherished mythologies to find their dark residue: this masterpiece, an art film deftly masquerading as a thriller, seems to celebrate small-town pastoralism and critique big-city violence, but this position turns out to be double-edged. Josh Olson adapted his script from a graphic novel, yet the story develops with a subtlety that's entirely cinematic; two contrasting sex scenes between the hero (Viggo Mortensen) and his wife (Maria Bello), added by Cronenberg, are especially masterful. EiV Blu-ray Release Date: March 2nd 2009
