ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Hard to deny Krzysztof Kieslowski's Dekalog on Blu-ray from Criterion. As well as the 10 Dekalogs - the package includes A Short Film About Killing - the 85-minute extended theatrical version of Dekalog: Five and A Short Film About Love - the 87-minute extended theatrical version of Dekalog: Six. But also worthy for a top-spot mention is BFI's 4K restoration of Ken Russell's Women in Love - a brilliant, must-own, Blu-ray disc - loaded with extras. Masters of Cinema bring two strong films to 1080P with Luchino Visconti's Conversation Piece via a stellar Blu-ray transfer as well a beautiful Japanese film by Naomi Kawase; Sweet Bean - that deserves more exposure. Giallo fans will appreciate Duccio Tessari's The Bloodstained Butterfly on another stacked Blu-ray package from Arrow. Fritz Lang's The Spiders get a Blu-ray bump from Kino - a wonderful 2-part adventure film filled with pulpy conventions like secret passages, coded messages, treasure maps, double-crosses and more. There is similar adventure in Chandu the Magician - another Kino Blu-ray - adapted from the popular broadcast serial, this creepy classic conjures action and excitement at every turn. Modesty Blaise is a flawed film and Blu-ray but still has plenty of style, atmosphere and Monica Vitti close-ups to enjoy. On DVD Gregory covers The Woman in White - the vintage film mystery romance from the Wilkie Collins novel of the same name. Eric reviewed the TV series Empresses in the Palace - a grand story of the inner workings of the harem of classic China.

“I can afford a blemish on my character, but not on my clothes.”.- Shelby Carpenter (Vincent Price) in Laura (1944)

Have a golden week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Women in Love BD - Women in Love was hailed upon its release, earning four Academy Award nominations, and the Best Actress Oscar for Glenda Jackson. Audiences flocked to see its famous, erotically-charged naked wrestling scene, and critics celebrated the film's opulent design, handsome cinematography and the compelling ensemble performances of Alan Bates, Jennie Linden, Oliver Reed and Glenda Jackson. Often regarded as Russell's masterpiece, Women in Love endures as one of British cinema's finest achievements. Blu-ray Release date: August 22nd, 2016

Chandu the Magician BD - Based on the radio serial of the same name, Chandu the Magician is a veritable rollercoaster ride of thrills and terror, boasting some of the best special effects of its period. Edmund Lowe stars as suave Frank Chandler, better known to his enemies as Chandu the Magician. Though he tries to keep his supernatural powers a secret from his beloved sister Dorothy (Virginia Hammond), niece Betty Lou (June Vlasek, aka June Lang) and nephew Bobby (Nestor Aber), Chandu's hand is forced by megalomaniacal villain Roxor (Bela Lugosi at his ripest). Holding Dorothy's scientist husband Robert Regent (H. B. Walthall) captive, Roxor hopes to force Regent to reveal the secret of his death ray (created, of course, "for the good of mankind") by kidnapping the scientist's wife and kids. Blu-ray Release date: August 23rd, 2016

The Bloodstained Butterfly BD - Prolific Italian filmmaker Duccio Tessari (La Morte Risale a Ieri Sera) returned to the giallo field with this first-rate detective thriller which begins with a French co-ed (Carole Andre) repeatedly stabbed in a park during a thunderstorm. The suspicion falls on sportscaster Alessandro Marchi (Giancarlo Sbargia), who is being framed (or so it seems) by his trysting wife (Ida Galli, aka Evelyn Stewart) and lawyer (Gunther M. Stoll). Unfortunately, while Marchi is being railroaded into prison, the murders begin anew, and Marchi is released to face the dead girl's grieving lover (Helmut Berger), whose motives would later be echoed in even better Italian thrillers such as Tenebre. Blu-ray Release date: August 22nd, 2016

Sweet Bean BD - One of the most acclaimed figures in modern Japanese cinema, Naomi Kawase followed up her remarkable 2014 film Still the Water with Sweet Bean [An], a small-town drama of culinary redemption, which opened the prestigious Un Certain Regard strain of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. Struggling street food vendor Sentaro finds himself confronted with Tokue (Kirin Kiki), an odd but sympathetic elderly lady looking for work. When he reluctantly accepts, it's not long before Tokue proves to have an extraordinary gift when it comes to making "an" - the sweet red bean paste filling used in his dorayakis - which starts a relationship that is about much more than just street food. Blu-ray Release date: August 22nd, 2016

Modesty Blaise BD - A popular British comic strip series served as inspiration for this light-hearted espionage adventure, which if nothing else certainly shows the marks of its origins in the mid-1960s. A large departure for director Joseph Losey, better known for brooding interpretations of Harold Pinter works (The Servant, Accident), the film is emphatically bright and colorful, taking on at times a nearly psychedelic feel. The strangeness is emphasized by the unusual casting, including Italian star Monica Vitti in her first English-speaking role as the title character and Dirk Bogarde, playing against type as her arch-nemesis. Essentially everything is played for its camp value, including the rather convoluted, James Bond-like plot, which concerns the hijacking of a shipment of diamonds heading for the Middle East. Blu-ray Release date: August 23rd, 2016

Conversation Piece BD - A retired American professor (Lancaster) lives a solitary and luxurious life in a house in Rome. His world takes an unexpected turn when he is forced to rent part of his house to a countess and her companions: a lover, a daughter and the daughter's boyfriend. Forced into interaction with the unruly younger group, the professor's growing fascination begins to stir the possibilities of a life he had previously kept at arm's length. Blu-ray Release date: August 15th, 2016

The Spiders BD - Fritz Lang's Spiders is about the adventures of high-society adventurer Kay Hoog (Carl de Vogt, whose gaunt, expressionless face resembles a younger William S. Hart) and his arch nemesis, a secret criminal organization known as the Spiders. Part 1 (''The Golden Lake'') is a treasure hunt that takes both Kay and Spiders mastermind Lio Sha (Ressel Orla) to Peru, where they battle primitive Incas (who capture Lio for a human sacrifice) and each other for a fortune in hidden gold. Part 2 (''The Diamond Ship'') is a longer and far more intricate conspiracy involving a hidden criminal underground beneath the streets of Chinatown, a legendary lost jewel known as the Buddha Head Diamond, and an ambitious plot to rule all of Asia. Full of secret passages, coded messages, treasure maps, double-crosses, and death-defying escapes, Lang's pulpy action-fantasy borrows from the wacky serials of Louis Feuillaude... Blu-ray Release Date: August 23rd, 2016

Dekalog (Criterion) BD - This is the brilliant series of ten films directed and co-written by Krzysztof Kieslowski for Polish television in 1987. Each short films is loosely but philosophically accurate in its basis on one of each of the Ten Commandments. Diagnosing moral ambiguities with simplistic and gripping realism is only scratching the surface of this probing and infinity everlasting series of short films that bind themselves together on a ultimately fascinating premise of the scriptures and the tablets of Moses. This is 'it' folks. Blu-ray Release Date: September 27th, 2016

The Woman in White - The Woman in White has been adapted many times over the years, including into a Broadway show with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. This is a wonderful, compelling adaptation done in black and white, starring Gig Young, Alexis Smith, Eleanor Parker, Agnes Moorhead and Sidney Greenstreet. Young plays an art instructor en route to the Fairlie home when he meets a woman in white, who runs away from him. When he arrives at the house and sees the two young women of the house, Marian (Smith) who is the older and Laura (Parker) he is struck by the resemblance the woman in white has to Laura. Thus begins a mystery that brings him deeply into the lives of Marian, Laura ... and the woman in white. The best role in the film is that of the evil Count Fosco, played by Sidney Greenstreet, who is up to the task - he's excellent. DVD Release Date: March 10th, 2016

Empresses in the Palace - Based on a novel by Liu Lianzi, EMPRESSES IN THE PALACE has been condensed into six ninety-minute episodes from seventy-six forty-five minute episodes (nine hours vs fifty-seven), and it is difficult to determine how much of the missing footage relates to fully excised subplots, entire characters, additional scenes, or padding. Some of the transitions are abrupt but the narratives of each episode are generally coherent. The characters, performances (not to mention the beauty of the actresses), and the overall production value help to keep the show watchable even as it becomes harder to keep track of the large cast (including various other consorts, concubines, eunuchs, and faithful maids) and the passage of time.
