(aka "Wilkie Collins' Woman in White" )
directed by Peter Godfrey
USA 1948
The Woman in White has been adapted many times over the years, including into a Broadway show with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. This is a wonderful, compelling adaptation done in black and white, starring Gig Young, Alexis Smith, Eleanor Parker, Agnes Moorhead and Sidney Greenstreet. Young plays an art instructor en route to the Fairlie home when he meets a woman in white, who runs away from him. When he arrives at the house and sees the two young women of the house, Marian (Smith) who is the older and Laura (Parker) he is struck by the resemblance the woman in white has to Laura. Thus begins a mystery that brings him deeply into the lives of Marian, Laura ... and the woman in white. The best role in the film is that of the evil Count Fosco, played by Sidney Greenstreet, who is up to the task - he's excellent. [...] Gig Young is likable as Walter, Alexis Smith is beautiful and charming as Marian, and Agnes Moorhead is very effective as the understandably miserable Countess Fosco. Then there is Eleanor Parker who is positively radiant, and so good in a dual role. [...] |

The Woman in White is a classic adaptation of the Wilkie Collins novel of the same name, considered by many to be one of the first mystery novels. The Warner studio production features a great cast, especially elevated by the great Sydney Greenstreet (The Maltese Falcon) and underused Agnes Moorehead (Dark Passage), but the true discovery is Eleanor Parker in her dual role - just 2 years later she would win Best Actress Venice Film Festival award and get an Oscar nomination for Caged. Warner Home Video finally released the movie on made-on-demand disc as part of Warner Archive Collection in March, 2016. The new progressive transfer on this single-layered disc is decent. There are marks and specs on the print and some passages look softer, but overall the grain is healthy and contrast is well-balanced. The English mono soundtrack featuring fine musical score by Max Steiner (Casablanca,The Caine Mutiny, Bird of Paradise, Beyond the Forest, Pursued, etc.) is decent, with no damage or distortion. A theatrical trailer is included as an extra - this is another great release from Warner Archives that can be easily recommended. |
