ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): I'm torn as I find it very hard not to give the 4K Ultra HD of Tobe Hooper's iconic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre top spot as it is easily the absolute definitive package (despite the many digital iterations), yet Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring on Criterion Blu-ray has done justice to this masterpiece, although it has no new extras, and the towering Noir gem Joseph H. Lewis's Gun Crazy Blu-ray has a commentary and hour-long documentary. Equally hard to deny James Whale's The Old Dark House on Masters of Cinema Blu-ray - what a great package of amazingly entertaining film and I can't deny Cristian Mungiu's Beyond the Hills Blu-ray by Criterion - a pure modern masterpiece and the director's more recent Graduation, with the same Criterion Blu-ray treatment, can't be far behind. A personal 80's favorite Geoffrey Murphy's The Quiet Earth on Arrow Blu-ray with new commentary is coming - love this Kiwi post-apocalypse film! Speaking of which it seems I am one of the few fans of I Am Legend available on 4K Ultra HD. Based on the 1954 novel of the same name by Richard Matheson, it worked for me and the 4K is 4K, and has a commentary that the Blu-ray, also included, does not... so? Melvin Van Peebles indictment of 'the man' Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song gets a Blu-ray release from Vinegar Syndrome that far advances beyond the, censored, BFI DVD. Personally, I don't tend to embrace Michael Moore's films and putting Bowling For Columbine (on Criterion Blu-ray) last this week is only my inability to suffer his overt documentarian bias. My bad. No DVD reviews - maybe next week!.

'It was the only ambition I ever had - not to be a dancer or Hollywood movie star, but to be a housewife in a good marriage...' - Doris Day

Have a melancholy-dodging week!!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Beyond the Hills BD - With this arresting drama based on notorious real-life events, Cristian Mungiu mounts a complex inquiry into faith, fanaticism, and indifference. At a desolate Romanian monastery, a young novice nun, Voichia (Cosmina Stratan), reunites with her former companion Alina (Cristina Flutur), who plans to take her to Germany. But Voichia proves unwilling to abandon her calling, and Alina becomes increasingly desperate to reclaim her devotion, putting the outsider at odds with the monastery’s ascetic priest—and precipitating a painfully misguided, brutal attempt to save her soul. Blu-ray Release Date: Mary 22nd, 2018

I Am Legend (4K Ultra HD) - Robert Neville (Will Smith), a brilliant scientist, is a survivor of a man-made plague that transforms humans into bloodthirsty mutants. He wanders alone through New York City, calling out for other possible survivors, and works on finding a cure for the plague using his own immune blood. Neville knows he is badly outnumbered and the odds are against him, and all the while, the infected wait for him to make a mistake that will deliver Neville into their hands. 4K Ultra HD Release date: December 6th, 2016

Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song BD - Melvin Van Peebles wrote, directed, produced, edited, composed and starred in this powerful and inflammatory attack on White America. After the body of a black man is discovered, Sweetback helps two white `acquaintances' in the police force to look good by agreeing to go with them to the station as a suspect. But he is forced to go on the run after brutally attacking the two policemen when they arrest and beat up a young black man. Blu-ray Release Date: May 29th, 2018

Graduation BD - Blending rigorous naturalism with the precise construction of a thriller, this Cannes award–winning drama from Cristian Mungiu sheds light on the high stakes and ethical complexities of life in contemporary Romania. As his daughter nears high-school graduation, Romeo (Adrian Titieni), an upstanding doctor, counts on her securing a competitive scholarship that will send her to university in England. But when an injury sustained during a sexual assault compromises her performance on an important exam, Romeo’s best-laid plans for her threaten to crumble, leading him to seek favors in a world that runs on back-scratching and bribery. Blu-ray Release Date: Mary 22nd, 2018

The Quiet Earth BD - In a tour-de-force sci-fi story with only three main characters, Kiwi director Geoffrey Murphy creates an interesting dynamic nuanced with shades of mysticism. When scientist Zac Hobson (Bruno Lawrence) experiments with a radical new power source -- a band of energy that would circle the planet -- the project goes awry and apparently wipes out all living creatures (they vanish without a trace). At first Zac adjusts by indulging himself in some of his materialistic desires, but he soon starts a serious search for other signs of human life. Arrow Blu-ray Release date: June 18th, 2018

The Old Dark House BD - A group of weary travellers, a spooky mansion, and a madman on the loose upstairs! Director James Whale’s The Old Dark House is one of the best and most entertaining horror films of the 1930’s. Dripping with atmosphere and packed to the brim with thrills, chills and gallows humour, it was considered lost for many years. Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Release date: May 21st, 2018

Gun Crazy BD - As sociopathic a duo as are likely to be found in a 1940s film, Dall and Cummins are also perversely fascinating. As they dance their last dance before dying in a hail of police bullets, the audience is half hoping that somehow they'll escape the Inevitable. Some critics have complained that Dall is far too effeminate and Cummins too butch, but Joseph H. Lewis was never known to draw anything in less than broad strokes: recall the climax of Terror in a Texas Town, wherein Sterling Hayden participates in a western showdown armed with a whaler's harpoon. The best and most talked-about scene in Gun Crazy is the bank robbery sequence, shot in "real time" from the back seat of Dall and Cummins' getaway car. Warner Archive Blu-ray Release date: May 8th, 2018

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (4K Ultra HD) - The original “Texas Chain Saw Massacre” is a film of awful beauty and terrible power. It is made of screams, bones, spraying blood, chicken feathers, tall grass, two hot days, and threatening old houses. Its sound design is an ingenuous, repetitive cacophony of roaring power tools, terrified screeching, crunching flesh, and endlessly humming engines. 4K Ultra HD Release Date: June 17th, 2016

The Virgin Spring BD - Inspired by a medieval Swedish ballad, Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring (Jungfrukallan) begins with a scene of unspeakable brutality and ends with an image of uncommon beauty. 15-year-old Birgitta Peterson, on her way to church to light candles for the Virgin Mary, is raped and murdered by two older men. The men look for shelter at the home of Birgitta's father (Max Von Sydow), who murders the bestial killers in cold blood. When the deed is done, Von Sydow, a deeply religious man, begins to question the efficacy of a God that would allow his daughter's death, then permit so bloody a retribution. Blu-ray Release Date: June 26th, 2018

Bowling For Columbine BD - In the wake of the Columbine High School massacre in 1999, the intrepid documentarian Michael Moore set out to investigate the long, often volatile love affair between Americans and their firearms, uncovering the pervasive culture of fear that keeps the nation locked and loaded. Equipped with a camera and a microphone, Moore follows the trail of bullets from Littleton, Colorado, and Flint, Michigan, all the way to Kmart’s Michigan headquarters and NRA president Charlton Heston’s Beverly Hills mansion, meeting shooting survivors, militia members, mild-mannered Canadians, and musician Marilyn Manson along the way.
