ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey):  The good thing about the handful of Blu-ray reviews I did this week - is that I LOVED every film! Number one would be Nicholas Ray's iconic Noir, They Live By Night, now on Criterion Blu-ray. One of the pinnacles of dark cinema. The other Criterion Blu-rays we reviewed this week are also so desirable - especially Kenji Mizoguchi's Ugetsu Monogatari. 4K Restored on Blu-ray for, what is considered, the director's crowning achievement. One of the most re-watched films in my digital library is John Frankenheimer's Seven Days in May. A Brilliant political-thriller with an all-star cast, directed by a uniquely gifted storyteller available on Blu-ray with commentary. Nu'ff said. Terry Zwigoff's Ghost World is a wonderful film about maturing as a self-professed misfit desirous of eclectia - and the Criterion Blu-ray is a must-own. How this is last is beyond me - my favorite, energetic, opening sequences of any film; Walter Hill's genre-homage Streets of Fire, has so much appeal. The new Shout! Factory is a 2 Blu-ray Collector's Edition provides the best presentation where you want it - in the audio. On DVD Eric covered 5 titles; the documentary Mifune The Last Samurai is highly regarded and one I look forward to seeing myself. The Girl From the Brothel is an award-winning film out of Italy, Worlds Apart is another highly rated film - and is out of Greece and has J.K. Simmons. 2017's Secrets of a Soul (named after the 1926 G.W. Pabst film) sounds highly intriguing and Lovesong involves an intimate female relationship.

“Look, you’re a nice girl, but in case you’re thinking of mothering me, forget it! I’m no stray dog you can pick up, and I like my neck without a collar!”.- Kansas City Confidential

Have an exceptional week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Seven Days in May BD - U.S. President Jordan Lyman (Fredric March) hopes to bring an end to the Cold War by signing a nuclear disarmament treaty with the Soviets, much to the displeasure of the hawkish General James Scott (Burt Lancaster), Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. When Scott's aide, Martin "Jiggs" Casey (Kirk Douglas) stumbles on shattering evidence that the General is plotting a coup to overthrow Lyman in seven days, "Jiggs" alerts the President, setting off a dangerous race to thwart the takeover. Blu-ray Release Date: May 2nd, 2017

Streets of Fire BD - Walter Hill's classic, highly stylized rock & roll fable has gained a huge cult following since its original 1984 release and with its backdrop of rain-drenched, neon-lit streets is one of the most visually iconic films of the decade. Big time rock singer Ellen Aim is playing her hometown when she is grabbed from the stage by local bike gang The Bombers, led by the menacing Raven. Tom Cody, a tough ex-soldier and Ellen's ex-boyfriend returns home to get her back and he's ready to take on the whole gang. Blu-ray Release date: May 16th, 2017

Ghost World BD - Terry Zwigoff’s first fiction film, adapted from a cult-classic comic by Daniel Clowes, is an idiosyncratic portrait of adolescent alienation that is at once bleakly funny and wholly endearing. Set during the malaise-filled months following high-school graduation, Ghost World follows the proud misfit Enid (Thora Birch), who confronts an uncertain future amid the cultural wasteland of consumerist America. As her cynicism becomes too much to bear even for her best friend, Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson), Enid finds herself drawn to an unlikely kindred spirit: a sad-sack record collector many years her senior (Steve Buscemi). With its parade of oddball characters, quotable, Oscar-nominated script, and eclectic soundtrack of vintage obscurities, Ghost World is one of the twenty-first century’s most fiercely beloved comedies. Blu-ray Release Date: May 30th, 2017

Ugetsu Monogatari BD - The great Japanese director Kenji Mizoguchi draws on sources from both East and West for this, his crowning achievement. Focusing on an ambitious potter haunted by a beautiful ghost and a farmer who dreams of becoming a samurai, Ugetsu offers a commentary on the delusions of lust and power and the folly of war. Renowned cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa helps Mizoguchi seamlessly interweave the supernatural with reality, creating one of the most beautiful films of all time. Blu-ray Release Date: June 6th, 2017

They Live By Night BD - Legendary director Nicholas Ray began his career with this lyrical film noir, the first in a series of existential genre films overflowing with sympathy for America’s outcasts and underdogs. When the wide-eyed fugitive Bowie (Farley Granger), having broken out of prison with some bank robbers, meets the innocent Keechie (Cathy O'Donnell), each recognizes something in the other that no one else ever has. The young lovers envision a new, decent life together, but as they flee the cops and contend with Bowie’s fellow outlaws, who aren’t about to let him go straight, they realize there’s nowhere left to run. Ray brought an outsider’s sensibility honed in the theater to this debut, using revolutionary camera techniques and naturalistic performances to craft a profoundly romantic crime drama that paved the way for decades of lovers-on-the-run thrillers to come. Blu-ray Release Date: June 13th, 2017

The Girl From the Brothel - Mia, a successful Paris-based photographer, bored by her comfortable, middle-class existence, flies to Cambodia to surprise her businessman husband, Xavier, with plans of convincing him to start the family with her that she has always wanted. But her hope for a romantic rendezvous is dashed when she spies her husband in a brothel having sex with an eleven year-old girl, Srey. Mia, her world turned completely upside down, resolves to rescue Srey and return her to the remote village from where she was abducted. Mia strikes a repulsive bargain with Sanan, the brothel owner, and sacrifices her own body to a high-powered government official in order to liberate the little girl. She and Srey then embark on the long journey home. However, Mia discovers that Srey has stowed away Daa and Malin, two other young escapees from the brothel. DVD Release Date: April 25th, 2017

Lovesong - Neglected by her husband, Sarah embarks on an impromptu road trip with her young daughter and her best friend, Mindy. Along the way, the dynamic between the two friends intensifies before circumstances force them apart. Years later, Sarah attempts to rebuild their intimate connection in the days before Mindy's wedding. DVD Release Date: May 16th, 2017

Secrets of a Soul - Viewers in search of traditional narrative will be at sea, and its length may even tax fans of experimental films, but this duo does sport a series of makeshift surreal images that demonstrate the ability of the filmmakers (Frank and Stern share writing credits) to spin something out of very little. DVD Release Date: January 11th, 2017

Worlds Apart - Set in modern day Greece, Worlds Apart is comprised of three separate narratives each following a love story between a foreigner and a Greek. Each story represents a different generation falling in love during a time of socioeconomic turmoil that dominates Southern Europe overall, only to connect as a single story in the end. Almost like a triptych work of art where each painting stands alone, yet its true impact lies when viewed as a whole. DVD Release Date: April 11th, 2017

Mifune The Last Samurai - Mifune: The Last Samurai, a new film by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steven Okazaki, explores the accidental movie career of Toshiro Mifune, one of the true giants of world cinema. Mifune made 16 remarkable films with director Akira Kurosawa during the Golden Age of Japanese Cinema, including Rashomon, Seven Samurai and Yojimbo. Together they thrilled audiences and influenced filmmaking around the world, providing direct inspiration for not only The Magnificent Seven and Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood's breakthrough, A Fistful of Dollars, but also George Lucas' Star Wars.
