directed by John Sturges
USA 1960
A bandit (Eli Wallach) terrorizes a small Mexican farming village each year. Several of the village elders send three of the farmers into the United States to search for gunmen to defend them. They end up with 7 (Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson etc.), each of whom comes for a different reason. They must prepare the town to repulse an army of over 100 bandits who will arrive seeking food. An oft recognized Americanization of the Japanese Kurosawa film Seven Samurai. |

Magnificent Seven Films on Blu-ray - Return of the

NOTE:
The below
Blu-ray
captures were taken directly from the
Blu-ray
disc. ADDITION - MGM - Region FREE - Blu-ray May 2010 - Firstly this is part of the 4 Blu-ray disc Magnificent Seven Collection which includes the four films: The Magnificent Seven, Return of the Magnificent Seven, Guns of the Magnificent Seven and The Magnificent Seven Ride! each on their own Blu-ray disc. None are available individually at this time. I was a little concerned when I started the film as it still looked a bit dirty but as it rolled on this improved significantly. Expectantly the BD looks better at over 5 times the bitrate. It shows some depth, colors are cleaner, less artifacts and the image is more uniform also supporting the grain structure to a higher degree. Essentially everything tightens up and I see no DNR. This is another example where the image in-motion vastly improves upon the static captures below. I've only glanced at the other films in the set but they, too, appear to have benefited greatly from the move to 1080P.This is a solid audio track as well - a DTS-HD Master 5.1 at 3651 kbps. The mix isn't demonstrative but there are plenty of examples of separation pushing gunplay and other sound effects to the rear speakers. Of course the iconic Elmer Bernstein score and Magnificent Seven theme are as majestic as ever before. It has become such a huge part of the film and in this area the lossless track is truly appreciated. In the extras we lose the Christopher Frayling piece and his commentary but keep the James Coburn, Eli Wallach, Walter Mirisch and Robert Relyea one with lots of gushing over John Sturges and some talk of Seven Samurai. The 45-minute Making of..., and Bernstein piece remain as well as trailers and a stills gallery. What a film to have in the brilliance of hi-def. I had an amazing presentation and look forward to visiting the other 3 films soon. Thumbs up! ****
