ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Our patience was duly rewarded - Michelangelo Antonioni's The Passenger Blu-ray from Indicator is exceptional with 3 commentaries including a new one from Adrian Martin. A film that only improves with age - on a must-own Blu-ray. It's always a time to celebrate with new Blu-rays of Film Noir; Criterion gives us the elusive Moonrise directed by Frank Borzage - love, murder, scintillating cinematography - from one of the greats. Warner Archive bring us two more dark cinema gems - both from Fritz Lang. While the City Sleeps and Beyond a Reasonable Doubt - both with Dana Andrews - get the 1080P treatment and despite the limited extras we concede that they have never looked better for home theatre consumption. A close cousin of Film Noir with many of the conventions offers five stylistic Japanese entries in Arrow's Seijun Suzuki: The Early Years Vol. 2 Border Crossings: The Crime and Action Movies double Blu-ray set housing films of Nikkatsu's Borderless Action line rich with femme fatales and scowling criminals. Delicious. Pedro Costa's Casa De Lava is rife with poetic ellipses that make it a rewarding arthouse gem available on a fine Blu-ray from Grasshopper Film. Aki Kaurismäki's The Other Side of Hope gets the Criterion Blu-ray treatment - an award-winning wry, melancholic comedy in a package stacked with supplements. 1957's The Black Scorpion is another of the 'so bad it's good' brand of 50's creature-features that we continue to love - on Blu-ray fitting into our Warner Archive page, our Nature Run Amok page and appropriate addition to our 50-60s science-fiction on Blu-ray listing page. Sleeping Dogs - pioneer of the New Zealand New Wave stars a young Sam Neill in a politically-relevant thriller on Region FREE Blu-ray from Arrow. DVD coverage next week.

'However vast the darkness, we must supply our own light..' - Stanley Kubrick

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Black Scorpion BD - Set in Mexico, this science fiction thriller follows two geologists - Henry Scott (Richard Denning) and Arturo Ramos (Carlos Rivas) - as they investigate a once dormant volcano that recently erupted. Their research yields a frightening discovery - a nest of gigantic scorpions in the caverns beneath the active crater. Even worse, these oversized critters leave their lair at night to seek human prey in the neighboring villages. Blu-ray Release Date: March 20th, 2018

Seijun Suzuki: The Early Years Vol. 2 Border Crossings: The Crime and Action Movies BD - Available for home-viewing for the very first time ever outside of Japan, this collection of bleak crime thrillers, brash mob dramas and exuberant action movies, made across the first five years of Seijun Suzuki's career within Nikkatsu's Borderless Action (mukokuseki akushon) line, presents a heady mix that laid the ground for what was to come. Blu-ray Release date: April 16th-17th, 2018

Sleeping Dogs BD - Sam Neill – in his first lead role in a feature – plays Smith, a man escaping the break-up of his marriage by finding isolation on an island off the Coromandel Peninsula. As he settles into his new life, the country is experiencing its own turmoil: an oil embargo has led to martial law and civil war, into which Smith reluctantly finds himself increasingly involved. Blu-ray Release Date: April 16th-17th, 2018

The Passenger BD - David Locke (Jack Nicholson) is a world-weary American journalist who has been sent to cover a conflict in northern Africa, but he makes little progress with the story. When he discovers the body of a stranger who looks similar to him, Locke assumes the dead man's identity. However, he soon finds out that the man was an arms dealer, leading Locke into dangerous situations. Aided by a beautiful woman (Maria Schneider), Locke attempts to avoid both the police and criminals out to get him. Blu-ray Release Date: March 19th, 2016

The Other Side of Hope BD - This wry, melancholic comedy from Aki Kaurismäki, a response to the ongoing global refugee crisis, follows two people searching for a place to call home. Khaled (Sherwan Haji), a displaced Syrian, lands in Helsinki as a stowaway; meanwhile, middle-aged Finnish salesman Wikström (Sakari Kuosmanen) leaves his wife and his job and buys a conspicuously unprofitable restaurant. Khaled is denied asylum but decides not to return to Aleppo—and the paths of the two men cross fortuitously. Criterion Blu-ray Release date: May 15th, 2018

Moonrise BD - A small-town fable about violence and redemption, Moonrise is the final triumph of Frank Borzage, one of Hollywood’s most neglected masters. Stigmatized from infancy by the fate of his criminal father, young Danny (Dane Clark) is bruised and bullied until one night, in a fit of rage, he kills his most persistent tormentor. As the police close in around him, Danny makes a desperate bid for the love of the dead man’s fiancée (Gail Russell), a schoolteacher who sees the wounded soul behind his aggression. With this postwar comeback, Borzage recaptured the inspiration that had animated his long and audacious early career, marrying the lyrical force of his romantic sensibility with the psychological anguish of film noir, in a stunning vindication of faith in the power of love. Blu-ray Release Date: May 8th, 2018

Casa De Lava BD - In only his second feature, Portuguese filmmaker Pedro Costa brilliantly reworked Jacques Tourneur's classic I Walked With a Zombie into a reflection on his country s colonial legacy. A nurse, Mariana (Inês Medeiros), accompanies Leão (Isaach De Bankole) to his home on the volcanic islands of Cape Verde after an accident sends him into a coma. Yet he goes unrecognized by fellow denizens, leaving Mariana trapped with and eventually entranced by a mysterious community. Never before released in the U.S. and now beautifully restored, CASA DE LAVA foreshadows the masterful films that would follow, yet is an extraordinary, ravishing work in its own right. Blu-ray Release Date: November 14th, 2017

Beyond a Reasonable Doubt BD - Crusading publisher Austin Spenser (Sidney Blackmer) wants to prove a point about the insufficiency of circumstantial evidence. Spencer talks his prospective son-in-law Tom Garrett (Dana Andrews) into participating in a hoax, the better to expose the alleged ineptitude of conviction-happy DA (Philip Bourneuf). Tom will plant clues indicating that he is the murderer of a nightclub dancer, then stand trial for murder; just as the jury reaches its inevitable guilty verdict, Spencer will step forth to reveal the set-up and humiliate the DA. Somewhat surprisingly, Tom eagerly agrees to this subterfuge. Unfortunately, an unforeseen event renders their perfectly formed scheme useless. Beyond a Reasonable Doubt was the last American film of director Fritz Lang. Blu-ray Release Date: March 13th, 2018

While the City Sleeps BD - “Ask mother,” says the message scrawled in lipstick at a murder scene, written by an unidentified serial killer who preys on women. It’s a sensational story — if it bleeds, it leads — and a news conglomerate offers a big promotion to any high-level company exec who solves the case. So begins the wheeling, dealing and backstabbing of the competing media hotshots as they vie to unmask the so-called Lipstick Killer. Fritz Lang (The Big Heat), whose early career expressionist works would strongly influence the film-noir genre, directs this stylistically understated noir that features an abundance of starpower rare for the genre: Dana Andrews, Rhonda Fleming, George Sanders, Thomas Mitchell, Vincent Price, Ida Lupino and other notables. Blu-ray Release Date: March 13th, 2018
