(aka 'Aloha Means Goodbye')

Directed by John Huston + Vincent Sherman (final scenes) (uncredited)
USA 1942

Slow to begin, this accelerates into a fine, noir-ish thriller, set on the eve of Pearl Harbour and pitting Bogart against Jap spies plotting to destroy the Panama Canal with aerial torpedoes. Featuring the same irresistible mixture of darkness, double-cross and quirky humour as The Maltese Falcon, it again boasts - in addition to some superbly laconic intimations of violence - the inimitable Greenstreet, at his silkiest as a turncoat given to justifying his treachery by discoursing on the arts of judo and the haiku. But the real delight is the wisecracking relationship between Bogart and Astor, who pull a brilliant switch on their earlier romantic partnership - though still teased by a note of doubt - into the Nick and Nora Charles of The Thin Man. The absurd, flag-waving finale was added by Vincent Sherman after Huston, mobilised before completing the film, maliciously left Bogart in a tight corner from which only Superman could reasonably hope to escape.

Comments:

Although this DVD is only 'officially' available in The Humphrey Bogart - The Signature Collection, Vol. 2, a few individual marketplace sellers have broken up the package and are re-selling the single thinpak DVDs (aside from the 3-disc The Maltese Falcon - which is selling separately by Warner). We strongly recommend the complete collection which represents 7 disc (5 feature films - all on dual-layered DVDs) - they are all coded for regions 1 through 4 in the NTSC standard. Each offer original audio and optional English, French or Spanish subtitles. There are extensive extra features (see individual reviews for more detail).

I don't know if there are any super-strong noir elements in this film, yet we have it listed on our webpage HERE. The image is not quite as sharp as some of the others in the collection, and it exhibits some digital noise/faux-grain. Comparatively to other DVD production companies (aside from possibly Criterion) this is absolutely fine and watchable. The Maltese Falcon trio of performers put some twists in and the film, although paced rather modestly in the first half, follows a nice course in the second. The new featurette on this DVD is "Hollywood Helps the Cause" - it focuses on some of the flag-waving films of the era and the propaganda associated - a fascinating topic that could have been much longer.

Across the Pacific would have to be considered a viable inclusion in any Bogart boxset. This is another good reason to buy the collection.
