Do the crime, do the time. But what happens during the long years spent behind the walls of San Quentin? The penitentiary's new yard captain wants to make those years a time of rehabilitation rather than punishment. But not everyone's buying it. "He's just another copper to me," snarls inmate Red Kennedy. Humphrey Bogart portrays Red, continuing his climb to stardom in this brisk film that's one of a string of Depression-era works combining gangster-movie elements with a Big House setting. Studio mainstay Pat O'Brien plays Steve Jameson, whose carrot-and-stick reforms begin to change Red's thinking. An inmates' strike and a scripture-quoting con who swipes a rifle are among the troubles Jameson faces. And Red is another as he reverts to his old ways and makes a violent break for freedom.

I wouldn't say this is the best film in the package but I loved the brooding atmosphere strongly accentuated by scenes with Bogart. The progressive image transfer boasts minor dame, minor digital noise and some contrast flickering in the beginning - otherwise this DVD looks great. Audio is expectantly on the weak end - but anyone anticipating something robust will be out of luck - dialogue is quite audible with no extensive pops or hisses. Film historian Patricia King Hanson gives us a solid commentary loaded with details and behind-the-scenes explanations. She is an excellent choice to have done this commentary. Included are featurette and Warner's Night at the Movies - all relevant for one reason or another - if, some of the lesser supplements, border on filler. This is a good disc at a great price although we can't imagine most not springing for the entire collection as opposed to this one title. We recommend! |
