Night at the Movies 1940: Vintage newsreel, Oscar-nominated short

Another strong film with definite Noir overtones. Heavy on the melodrama supported by fabulous performances. NOTE: Jean Negulesco took over direction of the film for a short period when Anatole Litvak suffered an eye injury. This is possibly the sharpest transfer of the Tough Guys Collection... and for many it may be the best film. It has moments of darkness, but possibly this is exactly how the film appeared theatrically. Warner Night at the Movies extra starts with 5 options of shorts, trailers or a cartoon. Richard Schickel's commentary is a bit weaker than the others in the boxset - it seems rather unpolished an rushed, but still some decent information is imparted - just not enough it appears. Still a great film - tight image and another reason for the entire boxset to get a strong recommendation. |
