A day in the life of New York's 21st precinct police station. Douglas is the hard-hitting, by-the-book detective Jim McLeod, whose world falls apart when, through his investigations of an abortionist, his own family becomes incriminated. Based on a play - and does it show - the film works well enough in general, but ultimately the message of a good cop overwhelmed by the inherent evil around him fails to come across successfully. The big main set of the police station is impressive, though, and a colorful supporting cast make this always highly watchable entertainment.

Absolutely stunning image. One of the best I have seen for a black and white film this year. Superb sharpness, shadow details and contrast. Standard Paramount bare bones release with no extras and a price tag for the frugal minded. The image and price make it a must own for Noir fans and everyone else too. Wyler direction sends the film to upper tier to join the DVD.
