(aka "Grisbi" or "Hands of the Loot")
directed
by Jacques Becker
France 1954
"Touchez Pas Au Grisbi" is a great gangster-themed film starring French movie icon Jean Gabin. That alone is worth seeing this film. The story is about an aging, and soon to be retired, Max, who has just made his last score. All that remains is to deliver the goods to his fence and he can ride off into the sunset. Unfortunetly, Riton, his partner, decides to brag about the score to his lover Josy, and she lets tells her new lover Angelo, who decides he wants to claim the score for himself. In the setting of a typical gangster film, Becker focuses more on the friendships of Max and Riton, than the normal bang-bang-shoot-shoot, and his efforts are rewarded with a remarkable film. Jean Gabin is great as always, and the clumsy almost pathetic Riton is played marvelously by René Dary. The final "showdown" scene between Max and Angelo is a real joy as well. |

Another great presentation by Criterion. It's hard to believe that this film was shot in 1954 from the clarity of the images. Comparing the images used in the excerpt from "Cineastes de notre temps" to the ones in the film is like looking at night and day. The audio, while only monaural, is excellent. The dialogue is very crisp. This DVD is a must own for fans of Gabin, Becker, or the gangster-themed genre. |
