(aka "Knife+Heart")

Directed by Yann Gonzalez
USA 2018

Paris, Summer 1979. Anne (French pop star Vanessa Paradis) produces third-rate gay erotic cinema. After her editor and lover Lois leaves her, she tries to win her back by shooting her most ambitious film yet with her trusted, flaming sidekick Archibald. But one of her actors is brutally murdered and Anne gets caught up in a strange investigation that turns her life upside-down. Shot on 35mm and featuring a killer retro score from M83, Yann Gonzalez's KNIFE+HEART is an ultra-stylish and blood-soaked ode to '70s-era De Palma, Argento, and Friedkin.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Altered Innocence Blu-ray (June 2019): Altered Innocence have transferred Yann Gonzalez' genre-mixture Knife+Heart to Blu-ray. It looks impressive on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate with a blend of styles including negative-reverses, bold lighting and intense colors (reflecting the conflicted characters). It was shot on a variety of cameras including Aaton Digital 16mm and 18mm Zeiss Super Speed (to create certain effects) printed to 35mm. It is clean and can look very detailed and other shots can have a heavy style-infused texture. Overall - it seems excellent in replicating the original film appearance and is quite appealing, and frequently shocking, visually.

On their Blu-ray, Altered Innocence use a robust DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround track (24-bit) in the original French, and some Spanish, language. It has a score by the French electronic music project band M83 - Oblivion (2013), Insurgent (2015), Chronicle (2012), Divergent (2014) - with an aesthetic characterized by extensive use of reverb effects. It can sounds very punchy and deep in the lossless. Altered Innocence offer optional English and Spanish subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Altered Innocence Blu-ray supplements include a 20-minute interview with Director Yann Gonzalez and co-writer Cristiano Mangione talking about the evolution of the film and some production details, casting etc. Included is the director Yann Gonzalez' 2017 short film (24-minute) Islands (Les îles) described as "Characters wander through an erotic maze of love and desire." There is a music video: Les vacances continuent (by Perez?), a strange gothic video introduction by Pierre Emö (Valentin from Knife+Heart). De Sperme et d'eau Fraiche is a patchwork sexual trailer plus there are an international trailer, U.S. theatrical trailer, XXX trailer, and the package has reversible artwork and a foldout poster insert.

One of odd-er films I have seen in a while. A gay-themed murder mystery that evokes William Friedkin's Cruising , De Palma (eroticism, and 'adult' film-within-a-film concept of of Body Double) and Dario Argento (ominous Opera raven appearing thoughout). It's unique and interestingly shot but, certainly, may not be to all tastes and doesn't flow especially smoothly (which may be the intent) - leaning more to appealing to the adventurous cinephile. The Altered Innocence Blu-ray is a good package, great a/v and extras, and those 'open' enough to exploring it should indulge.
