Directed by Richard Franklin
UK 1986

An Experiment in Terror! Elisabeth Shue (The Saint, Leaving Las Vegas) and Terence Stamp (The Limey, The Real McCoy) co-star in this suspenseful horror film directed by Richard Franklin (Road Games, F/X2) and featuring a chilling score by legendary composer Jerry Goldsmith (The Omen, The Satan Bug, 100 Rifles). Young graduate student Jane Chase (Shue) becomes the new assistant to an eccentric zoology professor (Stamp) at the remote home he shares with two brilliant chimpanzees and an elderly orangutan butler named Link. But when one of the chimps is found dead and the professor mysteriously disappears, Link becomes dangerously aggressive towards Jane. Now, the time for “monkey business” is over and the true terror is about to begin.

***

Richard Franklin directed this horror film that plays like Jane Goodall in Gaslight. Elisabeth Shue is Jane Chase, a graduate student in zoology who volunteers to help Dr. Steven Phillip (Terence Stamp), a professor at the university, with his animal studies. Arriving at his mansion, she is greeted by Link, a orangutan dressed in a monkey suit. Jane gets to know Link and Dr. Phillip's other chimp charges, Imp and Voodoo. One day Dr. Phillip goes to town, supposedly to sell Voodoo, but instead, Voodoo is found dead at the mansion. Link then proceeds to ignore Jane's commands and starts pushing Imp around. When Dr. Phillip's friend Bailey (Kevin Lloyd) arrives to take Voodoo away, Link becomes aggressive and chases Bailey away from the mansion. Jane later realizes Link is holding her prisoner in the mansion, not allowing her through the door and keeping the telephone away from her. Link is now out for blood, and the blood belongs to Jane.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Studio Canal Blu-ray (February 2021): Studio Canal have also transferred Richard Franklin's Link to Blu-ray. This, however, is on a dual-layered disc with a higher bitrate. The image looks very similar to the Kino 1080P - but any improved quality might be seen in-motion - the UK HD presentation being marginally smoother with more consistent textures.

NOTE: We have added 17 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

For the audio, Studio Canal also advance technically moving to a 24-bit linear PCM 2.0 channel track. The score by Jerry Goldsmith (Breakout, The Salamander, The Mephisto Waltz, Seconds, Hoosiers, The Blue Max, Breakheart Pass, The Omen) and scattered effects may have increased depth - discerning ears may notice the superiority.  Studio Canal, also offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'B'-locked Blu-ray.

The supplements have duplications in the fine Lee Gambin / Jarret Gahan commentary, the 25-minutes of deleted workprint scenes, brief audio interview with director Richard Franklin and Jerry Goldsmith demo of the LINK theme plus a trailer. What is new is a 20-minute interview with film programmer and horror expert Anna Bogutskaya entitled "Musings on the Mysteries of Link". She discusses director Richard Franklin (Road Games, Psycho 2), how he uses 'old world' Gothic-like sensibilities in the film, the association to Jane Goodall and much more.

So, the Studio Canal Blu-ray advances in all areas over the Kino - video, audio and extras. There is some value here for those keen to indulge in this 'primate vs. man' horror. The commentary, and supplements are excellent inclusions. Entertaining? sure... it is something I would indulge in again when the mood strikes.

***

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (May 2019): Kino have transferred the mid-80s primate-horror Link to 1080P Blu-ray. It is 4K-restored but looks quite average - more dependant on the middling 80's film stock used at the time. Color seem true, there is some depth and the image is fairly heavy with texture present. I see no damage and assume that it's a strong representation of the best available source. Dual-layering and a higher bitrate may have helped.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (16-bit) in the original English language. It sounds clear without many immersive effects but another fine score by Jerry Goldsmith (Breakout, The Salamander, The Mephisto Waltz, Seconds, Hoosiers, The Blue Max, Breakheart Pass, The Omen) exporting some depth. The Kino BD offers optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary from Film Historian Lee Gambin and Film Critic Jarret Gahan who work well bouncing details the this and relatable productions. Gambin has authored Massacred by Mother Nature: Exploring the Natural Horror Film so he is an expert in similar film genre references to Link. They seem to be enjoying each other in conversation and it helps with the education of the film production. There are some newly released extras; 25-minutes of deleted workprint scenes that some may find interesting. There is an audio-only interview with director Richard Franklin running close to 5-minutes. We can hear Jerry Goldsmith's demo of the LINK theme, theatrical teaser and 2 theatrical trailers.

Link is a bit of a throw-away although a decent-enough start to a creature-feature double-feature Friday night. There are some thrills and suspense here - Shue is good in her role, Stamp too however brief - and the Kino Blu-ray offers the commentary and other extras.
