(aka 'The Cry')

Italy 1957

Michelangelo Antonioni creates a poignant and haunting story of alienation and psychological torment in "Il Grido". As in Agnes Varda's "Vagabond", the barren landscape, perennially clad in fog, reflects the isolation of the soul. The pervasive sound of machinery throughout the film - speed boats, refinery pumps, diesel engines, construction equipment - provides an artificial distraction to the silence. In essence, the cold, bleak, industrial setting creates a sense of dehumanization, as Aldo is reduced to vagrancy and inconsolable loneliness. Although not as accomplished as his ennui films of the 1960's, "Il Grido" is a transitional milestone in Antonioni's evolution as a filmmaker.

Comments:

This is a very weak DVD, but I don't know of another release. There are minor scratches on the image. It was not progressively transferred, but being fair was produced a long time back - almost 5 years ago. Sharpness is not bad, and contrast is acceptable. It unfortunately has burned in subtitles that appear very high on the frame, and there are no extras - not even a main menu - only chapter stops. I am quite disappointed as this is a favorite film of mine, but suspect we won't see a stellar edition until Criterion gets a hold of it and with their release of Antonioni's L'Eclisse - it is quite possible.
