Directed by Vincent Sherman
USA 1942

An excellent Warner Brothers actioner from 1942--completely inconsequential, but so what? It uses nearly every member of the Warner stock company as goodhearted gangster Humphrey Bogart leads his boys (Frank McHugh, Jackie Gleason, Phil Silvers) against a band of Nazi spies (Judith Anderson, Conrad Veidt, Peter Lorre). The director, Vincent Sherman, never amounted to much, but he does a bang-up job here--a fine example of what studio support could do.

Comments:

Although this DVD is only 'officially' available in The Humphrey Bogart - The Signature Collection, Vol. 2, a few individual marketplace sellers have broken up the package and are re-selling the single thinpak DVDs (aside from the 3-disc The Maltese Falcon - which is selling separately by Warner). We strongly recommend the complete collection which represents 7 disc (5 feature films - all on dual-layered DVDs) - they are all coded for regions 1 through 4 in the NTSC standard. Each offer original audio and optional English, French or Spanish subtitles. There are extensive extra features (see individual reviews for more detail).

I loved the film - such a hokey premise, but somehow it is pulled off. The image is another strong one from Warner. Very crisp with strong grey-tones. There is an intriguing commentary by the Methuselah of the industry - director Vincent Sherman - clocking in at 99 and still his infrequent comments are generally viable and his reminiscences sharp in the context of the film production. He is supported by biographer Eric Lax who details many of the bit part players careers.

On top of the commentary and Warners usual Night at the Movies features and trailers is another new featurette - Call the Usual Subjects: The Craft of the Character Actor. It gives some credit to the, often unsung, character actors in the Warner camp.

I can see people not getting into this film as much as some of the others in the collection but I thought it was a great aberration. lot's of fun with bogie playing one of his standard roles, with a little twist.
